My father is approaching 70 and still gets happy meals. re: the fries, you get 2 "sides" in a happy meal now, so if you want the old size small fry just get two of the new ones. Fuck the apples/yogurt or whatever the other shit is.

Maybe it's because of inflation. I can definitely see it in other products.
But I also think that the retarded "fast-food makes you fat" moral panic and the companies response to it has a big influence.
The sensation of not feeling full all of the time is foreign to most Americans and increasingly other countries.
When you bring a kid to McDonald's it's not for his dinner, it's seen as a treat.
So you have a culture of constantly grazing at food throughout the day.
Forget about that three square meals meme (and even that's too much for for a largely sedentary lifestyle). Most Americans are eating double that, and kids and adults are getting fatter.
Obesity will soon become the norm.
People hate personal responsibility so they like to blame the food industry. So this is the food industries response to Americans shovelling food down their fat little mutt kids cakeholes all day.
It won't do shit for the obesity epidemic as they will be eating a lot more stuff elsewhere.
Try giving kids a meal that meets 50% of their daily calorific needs and see those that have no self control or personal responsibility whinge.
