Ok, so I finally realised that when Americans say "grilled cheese" they actually mean a cheese sandwich fried in butter. Something of a revelation, so yesterday I cooked one and was pleasantly surprised. It IS a tasty sandwich. On the other hand, however, like much American food, I found it a little bland. So, grilled cheese aficionados of /ck/, what extra ingredients to you include to lift this creation? What was in the best one you ever had?

Most senior menu's at diners add bacon and thinly sliced tomato.

Try making a small batch of creamy tomato soup along side the grilled cheese. Pretty common to dip the grilled cheese in the tomato soup.

mayo as the crust though, which is an important distinction. dipping it into tomato sauce is great. using shredded or a variety of cheeses is great. adding spice to it is great. using cheese as an exterior is great.

If using cheddar, try a bit of hot sauce.
I also liked to pull the sandwich apart right as it came off the grill and put sliced pickles inside (need to do it when the cheese a still hot, otherwise it cools and holds the bread together).

A sprinkle of this or similar garlic/salt mixture. Ensure the bread is COMPLETELY covered with butter to the edges. Allows the bread to be cooked longer without burning so that the cheese can melt fully. Cook low to avoid butter burning.

Take any deli meat of choice and fry it in the pan until golden. (I like black forest ham, pastrami, or sun-dried tomato turkey). Set aside.
Butter the "outside" of your bread, and start to toast it in the pan.
Add spicy mustard (whether through powder or psate) to the inside of the toasted bread.
Add your American cheese slices (2x thickness is ideal, sometimes 3 slices are needed to cover a wider loaf).
Add a secondary cheese, something with more body, even if it has less meltability.
Add your previously browned meats.
Add garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, or other spice of choice.
Add your top layer of bread.
Grill on both sides until everything is toasted and melty.

There's your optimal grilled cheese. Take a fat, internet shit on anybody that even so much as mentions grilled cheese vs. melt, they're pedantic faggots not worth your attention.

For plain sandwich just dip it in tomato soup. If you are adding to sandwich, ditch the soup and go all-in. Notable inclusions are jalapeños, bacon, tomato, and chicken.

Try a cheese blend. Sharp cheddar, gouda, and smoked provolone (or any smoked cheese really). Some chives, garlic, red onion, and lots of pepper is a nice addition. If you eat meat you can't go wrong with a slice of ham, bacon or salami.

People often have it with tomato soup and dip the sandwich into the soup. I've done it with a small dipping bowl of heated marinara sauce. You could also do mozzarella and pizza sauce.

there are a lot of ways to make a grilled cheese sandwich really pop.

Something as simple as adding a slice of tomato w some salt on it can radically change the taste. Others have mentioned dipping grilled cheese in tomato soup.

Also changing up the type of cheese or bread can also make a big difference. Sometimes I like to do gruyere cheese with onions, even better if they're carmelized.
