First, those dudes build subs in the specific way that makes those ingredients palatable, so put some thought into the layering of your ingredients and remember that the top goes on last, but your tongue is on the bottom of any bite.

Second, bread quality; white bread sucks. Go to Walmart and buy some cheap French bread for a buck, it's infinitely better sandwich fodder despite barely even being good bread.

Third, lettuce. We use lettuce in sandwiches as filler, sure, for crunch, definitely, but primarily to add moisture. You won't taste shit in any bite without moisture, and cold cuts and cheese do not add enough on their own.

You don't need lettuce, onions, or tomato on every sandwich, but they're recommended because most human cultures agree that they've very good things to put in a stack of bread-covered food.

Finally, expectation; it's fun buying food, and that makes you enjoy it more.

Look up some sandwichcraft, get into the process, and that enthusiasm will transfer over to your enjoyment of the end result.

Oh, and spread your condiments thinly on the bottom layer of bread, you never need as much as you think and this also resolves those moisture issues without soaking your entire sandwich.

Don't do this to sandwiches you're storing overnight, and consider a dipping sauce, like au jous or some Italian dressing, to kick it up a bit.

good post except walmarts French bread is dogshit that's worse than the cheapest loaf of white bread. their French bread is literally just the same shitty white bread as the rest of their bakery but it's vaguely shaped like baguette

they make or buy bread daily. they slice their meat in house. the produce they get doesnt hang around in the fridge too long before its used like the shit from the grocery store. their meat probably comes from a better quality supplier than what the grocery stores have access to.
i notice restaurant suppliers just have better quality stuff in general. like the tendies you can get at the cash and carry are better than anything ive had from the grocery store.

Nah the qualitative difference between their French bread and a bag of sliced is pretty objective and I'm not sure which genes you need to be missing to think they're even in quality

It's got a tougher chew and a noticeably higher salt content, makes it the best option you're gonna find in a supermarket unless you really think shelling out six bucks for some still preservative-loaded whole grain quasi-vegan sub rolls does anything but make the terrorists win

It goes without saying that better quality bread is better, but homie's clearly not looking to construct the Porsche of lunch foods here

And yeah lots of time it is the bread. Sub places usually use a proprietary bread that’s baked a certain way. Stuff from stores doesn’t tend to have the right crisp and chewiness. Unless you buy the right ones. Will require shopping around for the right brand, or baking your own.

I love Jersey Mikes cuz they slice when you order. Fresh sliced stuff from the deli is great - volatile compounds with pungent flavor evaporate or decompose after being exposed to oxygen. It makes a real difference. But stuff cut in the deli is good for a few days.
