has anyone figured out a way to deal with this?

Get it almost to the snapping point, then gently bend it back and forth. That much is obvious and may work well enough but the master's method is to tear the top off sideways once the joint is sufficiently weakened, thereby negating any spring force that would spray oil.

Unlike rectangular or round cans, They're not meant to be eaten straight.
Ovalcan is meant to be cooked into something else, probably crumbling the deenz into the sauce.

You definitely CAN eat them straight, they're just improved by further cooking.

You also get a lot of extra saucy goodness along with the large deenz.
Probably makes a great sandwich if you can find a long loaf (think baguette shape) with a soft crust - a hoagie roll maybe. Needs something thick to soak up some sauce. Crunchy crust, like a regular baguette, is just against my preference for deenz on bread, but maybe you like.

Tossed with long pasta is nice.

La Sirena/California Girl/Iberia/Polar/Sunny Sea/999/777/555/Goya and many others offer this style. Expect some spanish language on the label.
Style is generally popular in central/south america.

I also see you may have a skinny round can. Which one did you get? That looks like a Filipino style; similar, but less saucy.

Polar cleartop or another bone in brisling in olive oil. Polar cleartop is smoked.
