A lot of our food we can't export, especially stuff with corn syrup because it would be considered "not for human consumption" in places like the EU. Brit here, it's the opposite in my country. McDonald's is much cheaper than Burger King. At McDonald's you can get a double cheeseburger for £1.59, or a bacon double cheeseburger for £1.99. At Burger King, a bacon double cheeseburger is £5.29. That's over twice as much as the McD's bacon double cheeseburger.

Further, a Big Mac meal is £4.99, but a Whopper meal is £7.99.

I used to really like BK when I was a kid, it is tasty, but it's just too expensive to justify these days.

Actually, in wealthy countries McDonald's is entirely staffed by 16-18 year olds, precisely because it's not a great career. McDonalds is better in cities and shit. it's mostly dependent on money in the area and the culture of going to restaurants/walking culture. for example, a place like Japan, eating out is fairly fucking cheap, so to stay competitive they need to meet certain standards. In the US most of it is just pull up in a car drive away and it's one of the cheaper options for eating out. It works enough to be competitive. it's kind of like how our convenience stores, they are generally kinda dingy because the market doesn't call for high end places.

I remember reading a paper about McDonald's business model abroad being different from its domestic one because foreign consumers have different, localized expectations. For example, they had to use domestically produced ingredients in Russia (and market their products as Russian as a result), and in Japan a lot of people eat at the restaurant itself because eating is seen as a social experience. It's like going to a family-friendly diner instead of an izakaya.

McD can also be very over priced in some countries. I was stuck in Bangkok once and had a hankering for a orea Mcflurry.
