But I think I honestly prefer the cold italian sub. There's this place in the west loop called graziano's which is this old school italian grocer turned deli which makes the best italian subs I've had

Well, the only people generally who have had a French Dip are sandwich coinasewers and Arby's fans, lots of people don't go out of there way to visit sandwich shops when they eat out, but pretty much every kid at least grew up eating tuna salad sandwiches, I do know many adults who don't eat sandwiches that aren't burgers and such, and who's sandwich portfolio doesn't go beyond the basic luncheon meats, pbj, grilled cheese, tuna salad, etc of their youth lunch bags

I think the true kino sandwich is the BLT. toasted white bread, thick bacon, whole leaf lettuce, tomato, and mayo. But I'd put it right on par with the italian

I agree about the italian sub, but there is so much variation between different places. A true italian sub should not have ham on it. It's a cheap filler meat used in place of the better processed sausage type meats like salami, capicola, soppressata etc. The bread is also very important, a fresh crusty roll is kino. Good lettuce, tomato, mayo, hot giardiniera are a must and oil/vinegar too if the giardiniera isnt too oily already. Love italian subs

Other good ones include the kike-style pastrami on rye. There's a jewish deli in chicago that stacks thick chunks of meat like 8 inches high, it's so good.

A good philly cheesesteak is good too, reuben, italian beef, **mexican torta** (kino if done well), italian beef, meatball, etc all good

Reuben simply because none of the individual ingredients are even that good individually.
>corned beef - way too fatty and salty, only good if mixed with hash browns so the beef fat acts as cooking grease and the flavor soaks throughout, or on a Reuben
>sauerkraut - fucking disgusting and combines two truly terrible smells, indigestion the food, no real nutritional value, yet you can't have a Reuben without it and somehow a Reuben doesn't ever give you indigestion unless you have something wrong with you
>swiss cheese - actually pretty good, but only on sandwiches and other stuff, not good on its own and doesn't have a real niche or is really good melted in general or good for just general eating like most other cheeses, literally made for deli sandwiches and reubens
>rye - actually another swiss-type ingredient, elite for sandwiches but only some types of them, unlike more versatile breads tastes bad by itself or even with butter unless freshly baked, really just "the other sourdough" in many cases, yet absolutely needed for a decent Reuben
>russian dressing, a weird middle ground between creamy, sweet, and properly tart dressings, not really anything other than "the other thousand island" in half of the cases where it's even used, no one has heard of it...except absolutely needed for a proper Reuben and really does make the difference

It's a miracle sandwich. Half of the ingredients are basically trash if eaten alone even though sandwich ingredients are usually delicious alone, and yet it's an S-tier combination and you can barely keep yourself from gulping it down because it's so satisfying to eat, even though you want to savor it. So you make two and get your daily limit of sodium and fat in a single meal, but it's fun.

Only people who want some cash or gift cards or whatever YouGov gives out now use it. People looking for a little cash on the side, if they can make a few bucks an hour absent-mindedly answering questions while watching TV or cuddling with their spouse, they can really use the extra cash to fund their hobby or get some new clothes or just save up.
You wouldn't understand these people, you've probably never worked a day out in the hot sun or some sweltering backroom in midsummer, digging up pipes or stocking shelves or so on, and reached into your little lunch cooler for a sandwich bag full of still cool turkey or chicken or tuna or egg sandwich, a little dry so the mayo doesn't smear everywhere, bread a little crushed up but you used multigrain so it wouldn't mush too bad. Never found that little spot in the shade behind the excavator and eaten it with your can of coke and thermos of water, maybe if you were feeling like a treat and your hands aren't too dirty you have one of those tiny snack bags of potato chips, or an apple, or your wife threw in a little chocolate bar to surprise you before she left for her early shift. Maybe you talk about the books you've read or local politics or the job itself or sports with the guy next to you. The main thing is, you're ravenous and the sandwich tastes amazing, and if these damn flies would quit buzzing around you and the breeze would pick up again, all would be entirely right with the world for the duration of that lunchbreak.

Also smoked turkey is one of the deli meats that's the cheapest (really only beaten by ham if at all), and in my opinion has the best-tasting cheap versions. Also a bit less salty than ham. Ham is great and the true lunch staple but there's something about white meat. Smoked chicken slices with black pepper are the true GOAT but less common and often more expensive. So very common sandwich, and also a true American original.

A number of years ago, I was having trouble digesting meat for a while. I went semi-vegetarian for a couple of years and was then able to slowly reintroduce meats into my diet without the problem recurring.

During that time, I really craved mustard. There just wasn't much call for mustard eating vegetarian.

So my favorite sandwich then was a bean sandwich. I made fresh beans pretty often. I would smush up some beans a little to keep them from rolling and put them on a whole wheat bun. Then mustard, onions, pickles, and alfalfa sprouts on top of the beans. And, of course, the top of the bun.

That helped somewhat with my cravings for mustard and turned out to be a damned good sandwich.

I can only agree about no tomatoes if you're getting your sub from a chain sub shop, or if tomatoes are out of season.
1. Never eat tomatoes on the day that you buy them. Wait until they become a deep red, and soft to the touch.
2. I could care less about organic produce (vegetables and fruits and grains) but tomatoes are the only thing I'll shell out extra for.
3. Produce at the market is usually harvested while its green, and tomatoes are no exception.
But, vine tomatoes develop just a bit more flavor on the shelf than ones without a vine, so try and get those, and, in general, smaller is better. If you're making a sandwich, sub, hoagie, then smaller vine ripened cherry tomatoes are fine, just cut in half and sprinkled throughout like olives. If you truly must have your big meaty beefsteak tomatoes, slice them thin and only use them when their on the verge of rotting, they can take a lot of ripening.
4. If eating the tomatoes without cooking them, salt your tomatoes, just before you put them something, but don't let them sit for too long (like in a salad of a packed lunch), they taste off after sitting so long with salt on them.
5. If you can't be arsed to do any of this horseshit, then saute your tomatoes before using them. In nearly every application it's better than raw tomatoes (omelets, sandwiches, brekkies, on your tacos, etc.)

>But, vine tomatoes develop just a bit more flavor on the shelf than ones without a vine
Nah, vine tomatoes have a worse shelf life so spend less time being refrigerated before getting to the shelf. But this has been remedied here by Wesfarmers who developed their own cherry tomato that has a longer shelf life and so ends up just as shit as regular tomatoes.

You're probably right m8, they probably do have less of a shelf life, I would say they taste better tho. And really, all fruit (it tastes like a veg but should be treated as a fruit/berry) tastes better just on the cusp of rotting. I mean, I'd get it with the vine so I could use it sooner rather than later. But, I'd defer to your advice if I wanted a longer sitting tomater.

Thanks for typing this friend.

My old man cut trees for a living and in the summers id work for him. After dragging brush all day in the hot summer sun, nothing was better than taking a break under some shade with a cold deli sandwich and some doctor peppers from the cooler.

Now I work in tech, make more than both my parents combined and spend the first 4 hours of my day in bed with a laptop, too lazy to get up to take a piss.

Btw reuben is the best sandwich, but not the pastrami, thousand island, Cole slaw bullshit. It's gotta be the corned beef, kraut, mustard, and swiss on marble rye. Cubano comes close tho.

Agreed, but I go with corned beef, kraut, thousand island (can't find russian) and swiss. Nothing wrong with beef and mustard but I like the sweetness of the dressing to offset the sauerness of the kraut.

Roughly in layer order from bottom to top:
>just barely toasted Italian hoagie or sub roll with an extremely thin layer of mayo and a generous portion hot cherry pepper spread on both sides
>Provolone
>Virginia Ham
>Capicola
>Soppreseta
>Genoa Salami
>Pepperoni
>White onion slivers that have been soaked in water for a couple hours
>Thinly sliced fleshy tomato
>Shredded iceberg lettuce
>EVOO, red wine vinegar, oregano, with just a little salt and pepper
>Rolled up tightly in cling wrap or wax papper and set in the fridge for 10-20 minutes

I know I'll get shit for the mayo, but I don't even taste it I use so little. It keeps the roll from getting soggy whilst the flavors mingle.
