Indeed, broccoli despite how it's culturally depicted is a great and tasty supplement to stews, curries, stir frys and several other dishes, it's negative association is likely caused by poor cooking and seasoning rather than any inherent flaws with the vegetable itself.
Time to dig in!

I think parents doing stuff like this is a major reason why a lot of people are averse to stuff like Broccolli and Brussells Sprouts. They taught dessert as a treat and brocolli as something gross. They taught young children that in order to get to your prize (dessert) you have to go through the ostacle (Broccolli etc) and then just forced them to eat it even if they didn't want to, giving them that sickly feeling.

Its why for a lot of people whenever they get brussell sprouts served to them, they end up with this sickly feeling in their throat, or when they smell them, they start to feel sick. It brings back memories of when you were forced to go through something you didn't wanna eat. Not only that but the young pallet isn't for foods like broccolli which makes it even worse to force a kid to eat them.

Its why when we're adults, and we try broccolli and the like, we end up finding out that we like it, becuase our pallet has evolved by then. Its just convincing people to try it because they just remember that gross as fuck food they were forced to eat as they were kids, and memories of its intense smell and flavour and sickly feeling come up.

That and parents don't know how to cook this shit, they just straight up boil broccolli, no seasoning or anything, no melted cheddar, nothing. There's all sorts of problems with how broccolli and sprouts are presented to kids that makes them averse to them when they're older.

>> No.15692454

>>15692446
For me, broccoli and brussels were gross because they boiled or steamed the shit out of them and they had no flavor.

The first time I ever had these roasted, it blew my mind. Now these are the two veggies I eat the most of. Add some garlic and oil and make things delicious before you assume kids just have a mental block about anything green.

Then you just dont put the broccoli and sprouts on their plate then every so often ask if they wanna try.
Of course the better way to do it anyways is to just not steam or boil broccoli so that it doesnt taste like shit, and add some seasoning to it.

>> No.15692637

>Then you just dont put the broccoli and sprouts on their plate then every so often ask if they wanna try.
But the bottom line here is that the child eats what's prepared for them or they don't eat at all. Is that correct? Or do you cave in to little terrorist demands and say fine they can have chocolate fudge pop tarts?

>> No.15692657

>>15692637
No? You're going with the most extreme result of my point and trying to overblow it. Instead of putting sprouts or broccoli on their plate and making them think its sickly, just put on carrots or whatever veg they find more paletable on their plate. Then when they're old enough for broccoli to be more paletable to them you start cooking it for them and you dont boil it and shit.

Yeah I have no idea why steaming or boiling brocolli became the norm when there are far better ways to cook it. It feels like most people don't discover how good brocolli can be until they're adults and can cook it themselves. Yeah, it blew my mind when I had roasted brocolli the first time too, with a nice cheddar dip. Seriously, if anyone reading this didn't like brocolli as a kid and hasn't had it since, try it this way, more than likely your parents just steamed the brocolli so it just came out chewy and smelly.

Whoa there, sport! We're trying to eat HEALTHY food here, and like this handy chart says, oils and fats should be used sparingly. You can have it boiled nice and thoroughly to kill all those germs, but we'll let you have some salt on it. Just a little bit though, wouldn't want to give you heart disease.
If you eat it and don't complain we can get you a happy meal later, it's all white meat and low in fat so it's good for you.

Imagine if you actually did something with it.

I always associated grilled broccoli with Men in Black and always asked my dad to make it for me when I watched it as a kid. No matter what time of day it was he'd do it. One time it was 8am and he still fired up the grill and made his stupid kid grilled broccoli for breakfast for Men in Black.

I know other anons mentioned this in the thread but did you try roasting it? Just cut into florets, sprinkle with salt & pepper, rub with olive oil, roast at 425 for 15-20min, just enough to get crispy and brown in places but not burnt. It smells like ass while roasting but it tastes very good.

Seriously, as someone who always just choked it down out of obligation, discovering this made it become something I seek out, I buy crowns constantly now. I don't know why parents fought with their kids over their shitty broccoli instead of doing this, it's hardly even more work, the only reason I can think of is >>15693488

roasted, steamed, fried and so on, i've tried it all, grew up with a father that was an excellent cook, my parents were tolerant and sadly i listened to cartoons and thought a good handful of vegetables were just bad.
when i grew up a bit and tasted brusselsprouts, spinach, broccoli and celery etc. i instantly knew it was mostly because of TV i didn't like them, some of them did taste as a child, but only broccoli has remained so.
i wont 'throw a tantrum' or eat around broccoli if someone serves it to me, but it takes me back to the feeling of eating at a friends house whose parents were bad at cooking, feigning a smile and swallowing the food with as little chewing as possible
