>visiting friends in Europe one summer
>go to restaurant for lunch
>ask for water
>served a warm glass of water
>ask the server for ice
>she tells me they don't have an ice maker

Is this common in Europe?

>> No.15690543

>>15690531
Yes, I am a eurofag and outside of cocktail bars I don't really recall when I was served my beverage of choice with ice in the glass. The only cold option is the refrigerated bottle of the drink but no ice cubes and shit. Kinda weird when I think of it now

Not surprised

Yes, in some parts of Europe you also have to ask for a pitcher of water or else the water they give you is bottled and they charge you for it.

Of course I do, but I took OP's post as one speaking purely of gastronomy/hospitality. I have an ice cube tray in my freezer and some quality bagged ice from the shop

>ice cube tray

M8, in the US we stopped using trays 30 years ago. We have a machine that makes ice. Its installed in our freezers. We also have a dispenser that fills out cup with ice

>> No.15690597

Americans are addicted to the most ridiculous things on earth. Oh yeah here is some frozen water to go with your almost frozen water. Oh thats not cold enough for you? Here let me turn on the SLUSHIE machine and produce a goddamn science project for you to enjoy with your greaseburger with. Then they say people make fun of them for being fat

You know, there are ice/frozen good factories that make ice cream and other foodstuffs. They also sell crystal clear ice which is hard to make yourself - they ship it to the stores and you can buy a kg or two in a bag to take it home. Do americans really?

You can do it if you want a very clear ice instead of standard cloudy variety that a home freezer/tray can make. CHILL OUT

I live in Illinois and I buy bagged ice and keep it in my freezer, it's like $1.69 and I don't have to worry about ice cube trays, plus it's totally crystal clear which I think is nice. Also McDonald's sells bags of pebble ice from their machine for $1, which is awesome for making cocktails like Mai Tai's or Hurricanes.

I saw a tv program that did a tour of a factory where they make that crystal-clear ice for fancy drinks and stuff. The machinery and process was surprisingly complicated.

Lmao the freezer is already "freezing". The machine just takes in water and as ice forms, it falls into a tray/basket. It might cost us about $5 more in energy costs throughout the year. Do you guys really worry that much about "efficiency " and energy consumption in Europe? You guys allow that little Greta girl control you.
