What are some dishes that seem only your family makes?

I lived with a guy who made something he just called cooking. He always has a pot of cooking and it contained everything. Beans, meat, tomatoes, vegetables, fish, etc all went in the cooking. He added whatever he picked up that day to to the previous day's leftover cooking so it would change from day to day. I think the pots of cooking would go weeks without being emptied. He worked as a longshoreman.
