Juggling LTO items has been their thing for years, but it worked because they had a solid menu with plenty of standby options to always fallback on. Then they got rid of practically everything that people liked. Not having a taco on the dollar menu fulltime is just insane.

It’s partly marketing strategy, in a damage control “lesser of two evils” sense.
Inflation happens and costs go up; prices can’t stay the same forever.
Unless it’s a signature/staple or high-volume menu item, you’ll piss off fewer customers by removing it altogether than you would by raising the price.
This is *especially* true in the case of “value menu” items with nice round prices; once people think of something as a dollar-item or similar, they suddenly feel ripped-off paying more because in their mind it’s still worth a dollar.
So your choice is to either get rid of it, or make a cheaper version and retain the price like McD’s did with the McDouble.

Taco Bell dollar items were always loss leaders, though, and not something they advertised like McDonald's used to. They were also one of the last places with an actual dollar menu, so it just feels like the end of an era seeing it go.

I almost never see a Taco Bell with those things on the actual overhead menu.
Someone won’t even know they exist unless they’re ordering via app or kiosk.
The closest TB to me has a menu basically like pic related.
If it isn’t a combo, a box, a “staple” item that comes in combos, or whatever the current “special/limited” item that also has a limited combo/box, it’s basically not on the menu.

It’s like they’re going out of their way to *not* push the cheap stuff, to the point of not even wanting more people to become aware it exists.

Those dollar tacos with the tendies inside are surprisingly good. The habanero and mango sauce are both good. I prefer their hot sauce over Taco Bell's, but most items don't even need extra sauce.

I've tried it a few times and have yet to get a beef burrito that I enjoyed. It's essentially a fritos burrito with the fritos replaced by the jalapeno sauce, but it just doesn't work, and I used to order a fritos burrito pretty much every time I went.

A regular soft taco is $1.69 and the only nachos they have left on the menu are over $5. Even if you just wanted to add nacho cheese to a soft taco that's another 60 cents, while the red strips are 25 cents, and that's per taco. I really think the modifications are where they make a lot of money, because most people in the drive through don't even use the app and just order things however they want without knowing how absurd most of the upcharges are.
