might have something to do with ABV. for 20somethings they can get a good buzz for cheaper. i do like IPA but i like all sorts of beer. to suggest pale ales are not popular is simply incorrect.

I don’t mind “hipster” beers because I like supporting small businesses and microbreweries, but I could never get into IPAs. Also Sour Ales are another trendy beer I find pretty gross. I prefer stouts, belgian-style beers and kolsches

IPAs are easier to mass manufacture because their extreme hoppiness conceals any inconsistencies in flavor. Yuppies then pay a premium for poorly made swill because of a fancy label and their incorrect assumption that hoppiness equates to quality.

Same. All the micro brewers were great because there were a lot of innovated new beers out there and it forced companies like Coors to at least try to adapt.

At the same time some micro brewers just poured as much hops as they could into a beer and called it a day. Hiding their otherwise shit beer

There's no such thing as an objective "quality" beer. The only way to quantify that would be control of the manufacturing approach and if that is the criteria then Budweizer and the other massive beer brands win.

They are so shitty. It sucks because some good brewers fall into the meme that they are good because everyone else is making them. Shithole breweries make red ales, ipas, and sometimes a pilsner. If you're lucky they are making a stout (but they don't can that).

The appeal of an 8% beer makes no fucking sense to me. Just drink hard liquor or wine.

I'm waiting for a micro brewery to make an American lager and I have yet to find one.

>> No.15673555

>>15673304
You're complaining about lack of diversity, but you haven't had 8% stouts or porters? Barleywine?
I'm not even sure your assessment is accurate, red ales aren't everywhere.

I've seen american lagers from many microbreweries. I can't remember a single brewery in ABQ when I visited that didn't have one. The two college town breweries I had prided themselves on their Golden Ales, but yeah also had IPAs and NE IPAs.

I've been to breweries that literally had 4-6 beers only at any given rotation and it sounds like you have only been to these, but those don't even classify as microbreweries at that point. What town do you even live in where stouts are some mystic beast and you are oppressed by IPAs?

Also, high ABV beer is nice. I love wines and whiskey and cocktailmaking but I also like beer in the 6-9% range.
Anyway, to other people reading this person basically isn't real. The IPA craze exists but if you actually go to breweries you'll know that your favorites aren't being oppressed. Lagers and stouts are everywhere, it's things like golden ales, red ales, and sours that get harder to find. Depends on the region though. Also, IPAs aren't masking a certain kind of flavor, they have wide varieties, which is why they've taken over. They can accomodate more extreme variation than other beer types. I personally prefer very piney beer, as an example, and basically need to drink IPAs and pale ales to get that. No complaints from me.

Real-nigga-truth?
Because it’s much easier to make for a local startup microbrewery.
It’s so hoppy that the beer itself can be dogshit and you can’t really tell. It’s the beer equivalent of dousing food with so much hotsauce that you can’t taste anything but.
Combine this with the fact that they’re also attractive to people who just want to get buzzed but don’t want to actually taste the alcohol.

Despite faux-snob beerlets loving to act like such beers are inherently bad, a pale lager is quite difficult to brew well, and keep consistency between batches.
I’ve tried a number of microbrew pale lagers, and they almost always taste sour/skunky; much worse than any of those “evil corporate breweries”, while costing significantly more because of comparatively minuscule production.
