There weren't too many airplanes, nevermind airlines when Michelin started their tourism/restaurant guides. That said, you won't find Michelin-starred restaurants in places where Michelin doesn't do great business.

Real answer:

Michelin makes tires. Tires go on cars. People drive cars. People can & do drive cars to travel to other places. Michelin started making travel guides with restaurant recommendations to help promote their tires & tourism. They were surprisingly spot-on with their restaurant recommendations that people started trusting their word. Then it became this whole big deal, and a "Michelin Star" is now considered a sign of quality in restaurants.

One time I spent like $25 USD in one sitting, but I'm a fatass who likes to eat, so if you're a normal person with self-control, that could easily be $10-15 for you.

There's even a Michelin-starred restaurant in Singapore that charges something stupid-low like $2 for their signature dish, no idea if they're still doing that, though.

I stayed at the hotel Langham court in HK years ago their restaurant was Michelin star cost shit loads. I ate street food in Bangkok in the stinking heat that cost 3 bucks that was Michelin star. You know nothing you stupid fag.
