If you have to ask, the answer is get one of these.

https://www.amazon.com/Andcolors-Microwave-Rice-Cooker-Steamer/dp/B07SFCYYXX/

These do a better job than the cheap plug-in style you are likely considering, while being similarly brainless and convenient.

Try not to exceed 1/2 of maximum capacity for best results. No problem if it's just you or you+1.

>> No.15609061

depending on the type of stuff you cook just shell out a little bit extra and get a multi-cooker/instant pot
otherwise just gook it on the stove top its not hard. make big batches and reheat the rice later if you find that easier

Does nobody here have a zojiroshi?

The real question is not IF you should buy a rice cooker but what kind of rice cooker you should buy.
Is there a significant difference between a 20 buck and 200 buck rice cooker? What's the catch?
I have a rice cooker for 20 bucks that has 2 functions, cook until water is gone and keep warm. What more do I need? How is 200 dollar cooker better?

>> No.15609096

>>15609074
$200 cookers are better because of the pressure lid, the smarter heat control logic ("micom", fuzzy logic, etc).
Even more expensive rice cookers are more better due to multiple heat sources, and possibly induction heating.

20 dollar rice cookers heat until the pot boils dry, then stop. That may be an acceptable time/heat combination, it's usually pretty good if you follow the measurements they provide, but it is rarely the ideal one.

The $200 cookers usually have a quick mode, which emulates a basic rice cooker and turns off most of the smarter built in careful cooking.

1st was a “micom” model (updated form of fuzzy-logic), kept it for several years before upgrading to their IH/Pressure model. My “old” one still worked/looked perfect and I sold it to a coworker for $100 (that model is still $200 new on Amazon).

Zoji’s quality in terms of countertop appliances cannot be overstated. Their rice cookers especially; they’re engineered for Japan, a market which doesn’t mind paying for quality, but intends to use it every day, sometimes all day to the point of it spending more time on than off.
Realistically, it will outlast any other small or major appliance in your house.
The main thing, though, is the rice you’ll end up with.
Feed it some good rice, preferably japonica since that’s what they’re dialed in for, and you’ll be floored at what comes out.
The downside is that nearly all other rice will have shit taste/texture to you afterward, except for maybe that at high-end Japanese places who cook theirs in a hagama.

It depends.
Washing the rice until the water is clear removes any loose starch dust. Starch dust + water = glue; if you cook that, the rice will tend to clump and stick together.

I kinda like the rice to be a little sticky, so if 3 washes gets me clear water (no starch dust), I usually only do 2 washes (a little starch dust).

If you're making enriched long grain rice, washing the rice removes most of the enrichment, so take a vitamin pill.

No ,the button thingy pops up to slightly lift up the pot so it won't heat anymore, once it's done. That's how most ricecookers work.

>> No.15615559

>>15615547
Nope, the button is where the thermostat is. It is ALWAYS lifted. It isn't used to lift up the bowl when done, the bowl is always lifted up.

It's just spring loaded so it's always making contact with the bottom of the bowl so you don't get a bad temp reading.

>> No.15615563

>>15615547
No

> Now to the spring under the button. The spring keeps the button touching the cooking pot at all times, it'salwayspushing against it. So if the pot overheats at anytime the thermostat will catch it and go to warm mode. It's very important to keep that button and the bottom of your cooking pot clean for proper temperature transfer.

>buyers of those products are just lazy
Lazy people drive progress.
So now instead of fetching a bucket of water from the well, we have municipal water systems - just open a valve in the comfort of your own home, get water.
Some people these days are too lazy to boil pots of water on the wood stove to make a hot bath, and even have some contrivance to heat the water before it comes out of the spigot.
Seriously, those machines to clean the linens? Laziness. Just take your laundry down to the stream and beat it against a rock for a few hours. Throw it over a tree branch and wait for it to dry.
Next they'll scheme some device to save the effort of dragging the rugs outside to beat the dust out of them.
You don't need a dishwasher. You can dunk your dishes in soapy water and rub them with a sponge. 10 minutes! Simple as.

Any other labor saving conveniences we should debunk?
