I was raised in Florida and have lived in Montana for a few years now, and while I still cry when it's -20, I'm the only house in my neighborhood with no air conditioning in the summer, at the most I might turn on a fan. Even 105 feels like a nice warm day, when there's no humidity at all.

That depends on the part of the state. Those parts that do see snow regularly pretty much just take the snow as it is.

The coldest day I ever spent was the day after a blizzard. School was out because the roads were impassable so I spent the entire day on horseback along the Texas-Oklahoma border looking for cattle that had strayed during the blizzard.

It never crossed my mind to complain about it, though.

I was ready to go. My lottery number was high enough (300+) that it was extremely unlikely that I would ever be drafted.

I did attempt to join but they found a very serious issue with my heart. That was a real bummer, but at least I had time to get it fixed while they could still do it.

most midwest cities dedicate around 5% of their city budget to snow removal not to mention all the other little things involved you're not thinking about that would be insanely cost prohibitive for an area to invest in for a once a decade/generation event. I lived in houston for 3 years and saw snow cover the ground once. dallas averages a whopping 1.5 inches of snow a year. seems like a dumb way to piss away 5% of your city budget and if you think the midwestern cities would be any less incapacitated without snow removal and all the measures put in place you're naive

Viet Nam had been going on for a while before the Draft was created. Trump was called in for a physical to be drafted several times starting with July 28, 1964.

The first draft lottery was performed in 1969. Trump was already a serial draft evader long before the creation of the Draft Lottery.

Correction, his first were student deferments. It wasn't until 1968 that he became a draft evader. That was still prior to the Selective Service Draft Lottery.

Austin here, lucky enough to have a gas stove so was able to start it with a lighter. Saved enough leftovers from the fridge to get us through a lot of it (but they cut it at 2am so by the time we woke up and realized power wasn't coming back some stuff we couldn't save, can't imagine getting sick during this so we played it super safe).

Got power back yesterday, so was out for a full three days. Luckily being from the north means we still have of cold weather gear (sweaters, thick socks etc). Also didn't lose water, but its under boil notice now...

Its crazy that three days without power and two days (so far) of a boil water notice and there are still people that have had it way worse. Good luck man.

Texas has no infrastructure for dealing with this weather and the state power grid was skimping on inspections / weather proofing and essentially was majorly fucked.

I'm in Austin and there are people who haven't had power or running water since Sunday night, without any salt trucks to deal with icy roads there was no way to get to stores (most of which were closed anyway) and even if they could the odds of being able to buy water are almost 0. Roads are pretty drivable now and I didn't see any water available at the store I went to (don't need it just curious so I could let neighbors know). They are just now getting water brought in from other places. It's a catastrophe. I saw Houston has already had some reported deaths of people who died of hypothermia inside their own homes. There'll be more as the week goes on for sure.

Yeah, I forgot about Texas probably not having any salt trucks for the roads. In NJ, I had to drive home once when the snow came a little bit earlier than usual and the salt trucks weren’t ready. One of the major local highways was basically blocked off because so many people couldn’t get over this one hill.

I was able to get over it fine with my Volvo V90 driving very slow, but not until after someone rear ended me coming over the previous hill too fast.

Yah I spent a lot of time in northern Ohio (23 years), lake effect snow, ice, blizzards, freezing all the damn time, and being here for this has been the worst experience I've had in terms of winter storms ever. You're just kind of helpless. I can't imagine what it's been like for people who didn't have water the whole time.

That's actually one of the reasons we will probably move. I've lived in Texas for 2 years and it's snowed 3 times, once last year, twice this year (one of those being this big storm which actually had snowfall and sleet a couple times).

People who lived here longer were surprised at the snow the first time it happened. The whole state shit its pants with this storm. I'm going to move somewhere with more infrastructure for this kind of thing like where I grew up. I came here to get away from winter weather...not have to prep water/food/heat to survive for a week or more for one storm.

During the winter hurricane several years ago, our power was out for about two weeks. They had power on half a block away that was fed by another circuit.

Thankfully we still had gas and water, so we didn’t have a running heating system but we could still cook and take hot showers. One of the people on the other side of the block had a tree come down and smash a hole in the front of their roof.

An average winter day in the rest of the country is not having electricity or water for 5+ days, all the stores closing for the same reason, and if they did open having nothing to sell anyway if you managed to get there?

I lived an hour and a half drive from Canada for 20+ years and being in Texas for this is worse than any storm back home I ever dealt with due to the infrastructure problems.

Yah that's it then im fucking out first chance I get. Austin's overrated anyway, it may have cool places but it's too fucking hot in the summer to enjoy. Unless you're out at night it just feels like you're trying to get from one AC'd building to the next as fast as you can. I'm sure it's different if you grew up here but if you lived anywhere with a moderate climate it's brutal.
