I am not an Aussie. I have had both veggiemite and marmite. They are terrible. They are just a concentrated salt paste essentially, with some savoury kick.
For a similar experience get a bullion cube and smear it over your toast. Honestly that would probably be better.

Vegemite is tops on fresh thick cut bread toasted to just starting to go golden brown but the centre is still soft.
Heaps of melted butter, double what you'd normally use.
