I'm regretting not getting the Bruichladdich Octomore but fuck me $230 is a lot to spend on one bottle. Instead a bought a bottle of the red breast 21 for $250, which is normally $320 where I live, so that felt good.

Beer and wine are very regional. In those threads no real discussion can be had because it's rare that two people have actually drank the same thing. Unlike here where OP posts Blanton's and every experienced drinker in the thread has had it.
Other spirits could be mixed in, but an issue that comes up a lot is why buy a 10 year old brandy or rum when you could buy a 15 year old higher abv finished scotch for the same price. Vodka there is nothing to say, Tequila only exists in USA and Mexico, Gin drinkers refuse to drink neat so their discussion is either straight bullshit or about cocktails.

Furthermore, these threads hit the bump limit. /ck/ doesn't need less threads.

Generally yes, that is too much to ask. The vanilla comes from the barrel and all whiskies are put in barrels.
You should probably go for something with really strong flavors that overpower the vanilla. A peat monster, sherry bomb, spicy rye, etc.

I'd recommend Aberlour Abundha. It's young, powerful, exclusively sherry matured.

This is quite region dependent, and depends on what you're looking for. I could tell you all about the cheapest 14/15/16 year old, but I suspect that's not what you're looking for.
But I have spent some effort trying to find cheaper and cheaper peated whiskies. In my region (Australia):

$45 - Johnnie Walker Black (Could sip, not that enjoyable)
$45 - Glen Moray Peated (Haven't tried, Have tried every other NAS Glen Moray finish and they're all shit)
$55 - Johnnie Walker Double Black (Slightly better and peatier than Black, but still not that enjoyable)
$60 - Ardmore Legacy (Trash)
$60 - Benriach Birnie Moss (Definitely the winner, expect it to be discontinued in favor of Benriach Peated 10/12)
$60 - Six Isles (A close second place. Contains Talisker, Ledaig, Highland Park, Jura and Arran)
$70 - Smokehead (Haven't tried, supposed to be young Ardbeg. Apparently better than wee beastie)
$70 - Bowmore No.1 (Haven't tried, Bowmore 10 lacks intensity so I expect the same here)
$70 - Benriach Curiositas 10 (Quite good, but I prefer some level of harshness which is present in the cheaper Birnie Moss. Definitely will be discontinued for Peated 10)
$70 - Ledaig 10 (Sharp as fuck. Either spend the extra $10 for Ardbeg, or save yourself $10 and get the harshness blended out with 6 isles)
$70 - Talisker Skye (Worst Talisker, not bad overall)
$75 - Big Peat (Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen apparently. But it's not saving me much money so I haven't tried)
$75 - Talisker 10 (Better than Laphroaig, worse than Ardbeg. If they kept this pricing up Id buy a lot more.)
$75 - Glenfiddich Fire & Cane (Quite good, worth about what it costs, expect it to disappear)
$80+ - Laproaig/Ardbeg/Lagavulin/etc (Your benchmark islays)

tl;dr Johnny Black is too cheap, so I wouldn't recommend. Wee beastie costs the same as Ardbeg 10 so it can't be considered a value pick. I'd recommend Benriach Birnie Moss while you can still get it, and The Six Isles thereafter.

Benromach Peat Smoke? its really as peated as Peat Monster? I heard it was around Ardmore in terms of peat intensity.

>> No.15587479

>>15587348
Yes.
I have found that I am straight up unable to predict the ppm of a whisky past Talisker 10's 20 ppm or so.
I did not find the Benromach (67 ppm) to be extremely peat forward, nor to be peatier than compass box's 30ppm (didn't drink side by side). I would say the main difference, and this could be due to peat masking the flavor, is that the compass box maintains more of its Speyside fruitiness.

I've had two Ardmore's; Legacy (14ppm) which is a very one note peat whisky but not that intense, and a Wilson and Morgan Ardmore 8 which I recall being quite intense and probably peatier than the Benromach, not that I can find a measurement or trust myself to judge.

I drank the bottle myself during lockdowns beside no other peated whisky, and the only peated whisky I tried on the same night I tasted it at the bar was the aforementioned Ardmore 8.

The only one I couldn't mix was a Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or that was VERY sulfured from a cask or casks treated with sulfur candles and smelled and tasted strongly of rotten eggs. That one got poured down the drain. Completely unsalvageable. Even fucking Laphroaig couldn't mask it.

such a tasty bottle. before it opens up its very rich and sweet, like a cheesecake topped with chocolate coverd fruit. it becomes much more tannic and wood forward after about a half hour in the glass. though for what is thought to be about 15 years old the finish is sort of abrupt and doesnt linger too long either.

If you're a smoker, it pairs really well with full-bodied, peppery cigars or a good pipe blend. Bonus points if the pipe tobacco is fire-cured (there's a few cigars out there that use this as well), because they will have almost identical flavor profiles.
Don't start smoking if you don't already, though. There's literally a hundred other Scotch whiskies to try, though, so no sense in getting hung up on one Islay malt.

You didn't mention what you bought, but this just sounds like any of those posts that say people only pretend to like beer/wine/spirits. Your palate might be fine but that doesn't necessarily mean you know how to drink hard liquor, dumb as that sounds. Spirits are finicky, or rather our perception of them is. There are times when a glass of whiskey tastes like nectar of the gods to me, and other times when the same stuff can taste harsh and unpleasant, usually when I've already had too much to drink or eat.
Let the bottle sit at least a couple of days after opening and getting past the initial neck pour. Let it sit in the glass for a bit after pouring, maybe add a couple drops water. Take small sips, I mean small enough to where there's not much or anything to swallow at all after swishing/chewing.

>wines are infinitely superior
Totally subjective, isn't it? I enjoy beer and wine, but don't find either interesting enough to drink for taste.

ok.... wow. I went ahead and poured a few sips worth as its been like a week or so since I had it and.. its a completely different liquid. the first time i fragranced it out of the glass it almost actually burnt my nose, it was a stronger smell than actual rubbing alcohol. tasted like it smelled.

the smell is like 5% as strong as it was before. Im having to actually stick my nose down into the glass and close my eyes to smell anything at all. I can smell the vanilla from the casks mostly, and almost like a hint of honey or some kind of natural sweetness. the taste is wildly different now too. its pure pepper corns and orange peel, probably not a flavor profile I'd pick for myself if I knew any better but I can respect whats going on here.

I think I get it now. The taste is changing as I sip it too. The peppercorn is fading and I'm starting to taste star anise and vanilla. I definitely get it now, the ultra small sip advice was definitely important. Just enough to coat the tongue and mix with the saliva. I dont feel like I'm drinking hard liquor at all, in fact the bit of wine I had with my lunch had more of an alcohol kick to it.

There's six very different regional varieties of scotch but people tend to think of Islay which has a lot of smoke and brine. Rye has a lot of baking spice notes and tends to be a bit sweet. Taste around as best you can and be sure to look for little sampler bottles to minimize the impact on your wallet. Whiskey is a complex spirit whose flavor can vary wildly with context, your favorite bottle is likely to be one with a flavor profile that triggers some sort of memory rather than whatever's topping popularity polls this week.

George Dickel Rye and Rittenhouse BIB are in the $20-25 range and absolutely mog everything else in the $20 bracket and arguably the $30 as well. The only explicitly 10 year old bourbon I've had is Russell's, and it's very plain compared to a speyside scotch - which are not known for their intensity. Ignoring that all bourbons tend to taste like wood and more wood.
