I actually fell down a rabbit hole years ago and watched a Wendy's training video from the 80s on Youtube in which Dave Thomas says the square patties are an iconic and familiar shape to Wendy's and with it the meat hangs over the bun, which people like since it comes off as juicier and bigger and more appealing.
