I have pic related arriving today. Been using a ten cup induction/pressure rice cooker and 2 pound bread machine from these guys for over ten years. Water boiler and coffee pot, too. Zoji shit lasts forever and is top tier in every category.

>> No.15523314

Induction matters more on higher capacity models, 5 cups and above. The top rice will tend to be more dry and less evenly cooked in large format models with traditional heating elements. 3 cup cookers don't really benefit from induction.

It's the cheapest it's been in a month.

Besides a dip to $230 on black Friday. It's been ~$280 for the last 6 months besides a few sales at $250-260.

So $255 is a good price. Not the BEST, but still a good price.

Its only the mid-high-end one. The highest end model in the US is $405 currently.
And in Japan they have $700+ models.

Same 5.5cup size, just more advanced cooking methods.

There are 4 rough "levels" for good rice cookers

Micom/fuzzy logic with locking lids, starts around $80 and goes to $200

Micom/fuzzy logic + induction heating (IH), starts around $200 to $400 depending on model and brands

Micom/fuzzy logic + IH + Pressure, same as the previous, but can lock and lower the internal pressure, starts around $400 can go up to $700.

And finally the newest type that uses all of the above but has more advanced induction heating elements and a heavy iron bowl to more closely mimic traditional rice cooking methods over an open flame. These are only sold in Asia currently and generally start at around $700.

These things can cook, bake, steam and slowcook. These things can even make yoghurt and porridge too. In a ceramic non-stick bowl. Rice cookers are godtier appliances and if you chose a good brand then it will last more than a decade of use.

That's just blatantly false though.

Slower lower temp cooking is better, you CAN do it on the stove top if you're super autistic with your flame control and have a good earthenware pot or similar vessel to cook in. But regardless, a rice cooker is super easy, follow the instructions and press start.

The standard methods of cooking rice on the stove top are simply not going to compare to even a basic fuzzy logic rice cooker, let alone more advanced models that cater to specific types of rice, allowing to select the preferred doneness (hard, regular, soft), and even scorched or not.

Again, you CAN learn to do all of that on the stove top, but it's not as simple as pour water into pot with rice boil then set to low heat while covered for 10-20 minutes that i see being posted on here frequently as a way to make "perfect" rice every time.

Here's how I see it
the really cheap and shitty $20 ones are worse than cooking it on a stove, but technically more convenient because you dont have to babysit a pot
Going up to a micom model, even one from an american brand like aroma is a definite step up from that, but aroma is like the top tier of mediocre models. I have one right now and there are a few issues I have with it
The keep warm function is only 12 hours, and the rice gets really shitty and crusty, but also if I dont scrunch it up to the side of the pot it will get mushy because water pools down into the pot from the garbage non-removable lid

To me, cooking rice is a chore that I don't care to engage in when I could be cooking the rest of my meal.
I'm willing to spend more to get a better result from that with more features, most people are.
Personally, I'm willing to shell out an induction heating model on top of micom because they cook more evenly and I'm sick of getting scorched rice on the bottom of my pot.
I also want to be able to cook larger batches of rice, and since induction heating heats the whole pot, the stuff at the top will be as done as the rice at the bottom.

Also I want to really really want to reiterate that cooking rice FUCKING SUCKS and is a boring chore

You can’t go wrong buying any of those 3 brands.

>do you think that the pressure cooking is really worth the extra premium?
It makes a difference, but “worth it” is relative to your financial situation; it wasn’t until a bit over a year ago I upgraded to an IH/pressure model. It does gives the rice a better texture, but it’s more of icing on the cake; my old one produced amazing rice. This just makes it slightly more amazing.

Because they also know that you aren’t going to make it as well as the machine can unless you basically do it for a living, and those guys use traditional iron or stone pots that cost more than the rice cookers you’re bitching about.

>Emulating the iron pot seems pointless.
Believe it or not, that’s actually the endgame. It’s the final destination and holy grail of rice cookers. That’s why Tiger, Zoji, and Panasonic have all introduced it in their top models.

Japanese actually have sort of a unified, hivemind agreed-upon definition of the gold standard of rice-making. i.e. the one single best cooking method which produces the best rice; a heavy iron pot, topped with a heavy lid made of thick wood, cooked over an open fire, in a long process with some insanely-experienced expert in the method making almost constant adjustments to the fire by adjusting the wood.

That’s literally what Japanese rice cookers have been advancing toward since they moved from simple electric pot to the computerized logic.
The fuzzy-logic uses dynamic algorithms to replicate an autistic OCD person adjusting heat on the fly, based on rice temp, ambient temp outside the rice maker, humidity, etc.
Then came IH, which allows thinner metal pots to have even heating much closer to a thick one, instead of the heat being concentrated at the bottom.
Pressure came next, which acts like the “heavy lid”. That’s why they don’t use high pressure like a pressure cooker, just moderately elevated.

So the current next step is using multiple induction coils to replicate the nuances of an actual burning fire. So the models which use it are currently unaffordable for most Japanese, and basically unavailable outside there. But like the other stuff, the tech will find its way into cheaper models with time.
