Duchesse de bourgogne is one of the worst spontaneously fermented beers (or beerios as I like to say :D) that I have ever lied my tongue on.

Compared to substandard Geuze lambic, or even Kriek (think Dries fontainen, Boon and/or Oud Beersel) the taste is simplily putrid. It shows certain quality if you work 40 hours a week, but once you actually devote some time to train your palate you find out that 150 czech crowns out of your allowance went straight into the bulging hole we know as the "Flanders region where we make good beers". Once you see that insane amount of glucose that has been injected into your poison like vaccine into a newborn baby, you start thinking if that baby ever had any chance to achieve anything by itself. It had nice hint of funkiness but that is the only redeeming quality of that little retard I can think of.

It's brewed in limited quantity in oak barrels, so the taste changes per batch. I had it a couple years ago in a pub that happened to preorder a couple barrels (a year and a half in advance the owner told me).
It was a bit smokey and dark, but without getting heavy like a Bernardus 12 sometimes gets.
Honestly it was so good that I ordered 2 or 3 more right after.

I wish west coasts were still a thing in the UK. The craft brewers moved on to NEIPAs so fast that it's like they all forgot overnight how to brew a dry, piney tangeriney hop bomb. I used to be able to get Racer 5 and SN Torpedo at M&S, now they just have watered down pales.
I like hazy juice cummies as much as the next man but west coasts are due for a comeback.

That's what's nice about pilseners. Hard to fuck up and almost impossible to add stupid gimmicky flavours.
But at least in Germany the pilsener label is very washed out. Plenty beers are just generic thin lagers with way too less bitterness for the pils label.

Pilsner is one of the most difficult styles to get right. Any pale lager has to ferment slowly in perfect conditions with absolutely zero contaminants to come out not tasting like piss. It's the ultimate mark of a skilled brewer.

Not a problem for macro breweries in a country where pilsener makes up 2/3 of all produced beers. Only the hobo beers have that cheap metallic hop taste.
