Read Kitchen Confidential and watched his first show from 20 years ago when he cokehead skinny. Thought he was alright. He lost me when he started exploiting third worlders for No Reservations all so he could travel the world and get rich. Final straw was him shitting on Guy Fieri (who is a genuinely decent human being) and the quote “Nothing is more political than food”.

He inspired greater American chefs than he eve was. He was a good writer and personality, but never a great chef. He never was famous for cooking food, just exploring and talking about good food out there.

That combined with the realistic, no bullshit POV in his book is why he got famous in the 90's. By the time he was a TV personality he was too old to run a line and even demonstrated this on one episode when he returned to his old stomping grounds and was absolutely fucking useless.

I really liked No Reservations, never caught his later work for CNN as the focus drifted away from the food and travel. Ultimately I feel like what killed him was cognitive dissonance- yeah he was a blue-blooded New England cokehead, but he essentially grew up in a broken home on the Jersey Shore and was as blue collar as you could get. He made his bones being real, and as his social environment and world got increasingly LESS real - surrounded by sycophants, politico's, and distress-mongers his grip on reality slipped. And I say this as one of 5 registered democrats in my state, CNN is just not a mentally healthy place to work, and then his fitness waifu left him and he shacked up with that floozy.
