i dunno where that pic was taken. normally their strategy is to put their stuff next to the name brand equivalent so that you see that it's similar but cheaper. having a whole aisle of nothing but yellow defeats the purpose. but yes we do live in a dystopia. too many homeless schizos in toronto. affluent suburban blacks pretending to be victims of racial subjugation. chinese buying up all real estate (home owners benefit from the demand causing the price to rise, younger generations being fucked in the ass). great grocery stores in some places, though.

Honestly, if you buy fresh produce from the grocer/market, and fresh meat from the butcher, most of your grocery list should be "minimalist" anyways. The only branded things I regularly buy are dairy, baking ingredients, and coffee. This is really only an issue if most of your diet comes from a factory, and if so, you have my pity.

"no name" is considered to be one of the finest examples of clever branding, and the case study on it is taught in design and marketing courses at universities all over the world. In 1978, the Loblaws grocery chain went to Don Watt, a well-regarded designer (he also designed the Home Depot logo), for advice on the brand identity for their store-brand goods. Watt came up with the idea that an extreme emphasis on the lack of brand could itself be a strong brand on its own and created extremely simple package designs with tons of empty space, the diametric opposite of a typical branded food item's design.

Update from the guy that actually bought it. I fried thin slices and used it in my Cubano today in place of ham.

Was excellent. The stuff tastes like shitty canned corn beef hash when not fried, but fried it's like bacony ham.

Sandwich was bretty gud. Cheese could've been melted a little better but my pan was too hot and the bread was browning too fast. Lechon was incredible.

I don't think you understand just how low on the shelf noname brand is. Real maple syrup is far too expensive to be noname, it would have to be their President's Choice label at least, and they'd still save the good stuff for Black Label.

For the record they don't even call the chemical stuff maple in Quebec, they call it sirop de poteau: telephone pole syrup.
