So, help me understand /ck/. Why have videos of people either cooking or eating food gaining any sort of traction? I just don’t see the appeal of it. Just men and women eating, shouldn’t be popular but it is.

The eating part is known as Mukbang and I think it originated in Korea where you could eat along with your favorite streamers. Then it came over to America where it’s used as a way for dysgenic untalented women to make money and pig out on camera. Some people still enjoy it for the companion aspect, a lot of it is ASMR-based, and others just like watching people eat for whatever reason.

I sometimes watch these videos before trying a new food. I was home schooled and got little exposure to anything outside of the super small community I grew up in until well after I became an adult, I'm worried if I just try a new food I won't like it because I will eat it incorrectly. It can be anything like
"I didn't know that everyone eats this with a certain sauce"
"You only eat part of the food"
"Here is how you cut this thing up."

I don't think I'm the main demographic for these videos, but keep in mind there are all kinds of people out there that have completely different experiences than you.


I can understand wanting to hear other people eat to feel less lonely. I just listen to podcasts while I eat, it gives me a feeling like someone else is in the room.
