Being on the southern border of the country isn't what qualifies the South though. By that logic, California, Arizona, and New Mexico should be called the South too. Louisiana is the furthest west you can get while still being in the South, even they start culturally departing from what you find in Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, et al, and eastern Texas is more an extension of Louisiana culture than an extension of the culture of those other states. It's not even a bad thing that Texas isn't part of that group of states, it's just a fact. Texas is western or southwestern, but it can't be grouped in with the South culturally or geographically.
