LFPT in my BSLN I had earlier in the day

BSLN shattered my expectations of what Duanni /luni are, this pot is less muting than my QSN pot, and due to the thermal properties of the pot it makes all teas I put into it extremely strong
It makes every tea so potent, everything becomes more, but since it nukes the tea I get even more.notes than I have with any other vessel, its the perfect pot for aged / mid aged sheng and clean shou
But I need to be careful with it, it was literal perfection for the LFPT, it made it astringent to a degree but otherwise everything was more, more thick and oily, sticky like candy, sweet as fuck but like a creamy cheeriness, boarding on the sweetness of nuts as the pot pushed it further past ripe fruits to that
But I put HkH in it and it blasted my face off, it went on for 30 steeps, but could of went more, I just wanted to stop, it was a really intense and nearly overwhelming session, so flash steeps or lower ratios in future, but versus porcelain? night and day difference with the tea

It might be my favourite pot, at the very least it changes the tea the most, and here I was thinking I was getting a moderately to high muting pot, nope, it's basically zhuni with all the benefits of the best thermal properties

I'm running low on my supply, I dont care for puerh so I try to stock up on fresh spring harvest and oolong fall harvests. I have yet to do jasmine tea in loose leaf, and the spring season is coming, is it worth it, and who does it best?
I mostly drink yunnan grown black teas as my daily drinker, but I want to have a daily green for the debatable health benefits. Can a jasmine provide a tea drunk like long jing?
I love flowery Oolong but I'm broke since the pandemic so its reserved for occasions. I was hoping maybe jasmine may be flowery enough to help make greens a daily drinker?

Wild teapot physics. I would be hesitant personally to buy a pot that's so heavily shaped in a decorative way. But it sounds like it worked out pretty well. I got this kind of different distant bitter like note when i tried the love forever from king tea mall. I have the TWL version, there's not any bitterness, just astringency in that pot, but it's not typical astringency, more like stick to your gums.with flavour

So I've been drinking alot of green tea for a while now and decided to switch to loose because it seems to be the way to go. I bought a West Lake Long Jing and I'm not impressed. I don't feel there's an overwhelming difference in quality and I'm not a fan of the toasted nutty taste. It's okay but considering the price, really not worth it. I actually like my favorite bags better. I also bought a sencha called Fukamushi Superior wich I haven't tried yet. I'm fairly certain I will like it better. After that one, when I've been practicing my brewing skills I'll probably will try Gyokuro. I also got a sample of Oolong wich I'm looking forward to trying. My concern about Oolong tea is that, from what I understand, have to use a huge amount of leaves.
I drink tea alone and like to drink it from a big glass so I got empty teabags for brewing, wich I find very handy. I'm really not interested in this ceremony stuff with small post and bowls and pouring tea back and forth.

Any tips?

You need to use slightly more with the ball oolong than the strip oolong. Otherwise you use pretty standard amounts. You don't have to brew oolong gongfu style with a gaiwan you can just brew it western style. I mostly brew it grampa style (check the pastebin)
>I bought a West Lake Long Jing and I'm not impressed...I'm not a fan of the toasted nutty taste
Yeah it's not for everyone, that's my favorite part about it.
>I'm really not interested in this ceremony stuff with small post and bowls and pouring tea back and forth.
It's up to you how you want to brew tea, do whatever you enjoy. You can get a reusable brew basket from a company like finum if you don't want to have to keep buying refillable teabags. Keep trying stuff and enjoy. Check out fullchea-tea for a fairly affordable way to try different loose-leaf chinese teas.

Gyokuro is awesome. I bought my gf a 3-pack of Uji teas from Rakuten with global shipping for around 50 bucks, and it included 100g of gyokuro, beautiful color and very earthy taste.
We have a German electric kettle that runs the run to 70c and holds it there for up to 2 hours. Use filtered water and let it heat up for 5-10 minutes, two cups/500ml and 2 teaspoons of loose leaf in the inner filter for at least 10 mins, and it's absolutely perfect.

What do you consider "western style"? Black and herbal teas are steeped or boiled at high temperature, gyokuro and sencha are not. Boiling is 100c, post-boiling water is around 90c which is where you would steep most English teas.
I use this kettle. It has an outer pitcher and an inner filter, the filter is removable. I heat the water for 5-10 minutes with the filter out (the "keep warm" feature brings the water to 70c and then keeps it there like a sous vide), then I put the tea leaves in the filter and put the filter into the pitcher. I don't need a strainer, tea ball, or bags this way, but you could use a tea ball instead if you don't have a filter-type pitcher.
You don't need "large amounts of leaves," an oolong-type tea might require a tablespoon of leaves for one cup that you could reuse 5-6 times, but green tea leaves are one teaspoon to one cup, one brew only. You could keep the leaves in there for over an hour if you wanted, but I'd recommend just steeping for 5 to 10 minutes and then drinking straight away. We usually make our tea on weekends and sip it for 30 or 40 minutes after it's steeped, and it's still just as good on the last cup. The magic of sous vide is that it'll never exceed the key temp of 70c.

Okay. Never seen a kettle like that. With western style I mean using like the same amount that's in a tea bag and let it steep for like 3 min, my glass is like 300ml and I bring the water to ~70c. Can I do this also with gyokuro?

>> No.15374181

>>15374168
probably. I'd use just over a teaspoon for that much water. 250ml water to 1 teaspoon leaves is pretty standard, otherwise you might get a watery tea that lacks the clear tones. Make sure you get the temperature accurate, if you have a thermometer or sous vide that's ideal. Going over with green tea will very quickly scorch the leaves and ruin the flavor, which is why so many people wonder why it's called green tea when theirs is always yellow-brown. Low temperature steeped green tea remains green, and scorching it destroys the soft, earthy tones.

>> No.15374204

>>15374181
So using to much leaves will make the the watery? The temperature I usually get right with a termomether, even though I've been a little bit concernedit won't steep properly if the water is not warm enough or tea will have cooled too much when it's drinking time.

do not use the leaf hold in your kettle, kettles are for water only, you dont want tea staining the inside and burning every time you boil water. even keeping it at 70c you will still over steep

I've never had a problem with staining, and my kettle pitcher has a pop top so I can easily wipe the inside of any residue. In my experience, I've had no problem with over-steeping at 70c. It's designed specifically to keep tea warm at that temperature and that's what it does.

I realized something today. My daily ripe is 7¢/g and I brew at 7.5 g per session. I have better ripes that I brew at 5 g per session. For the cost of my daily, I could afford a 10.5¢/g ripe if 5 g of it were enough for a session.

tldr; Maybe I should consider prices per session instead of per g.

I'm working my way through the 30 puer sample pack from a few threads ago.

When does puer start tasting good? Some of them are a little more sour, some a bit more fermented, but it's all hidden behind the flavor of decomposing wood and dirt.

My favorite teas so far have been Taiwanese oolongs, so it might be possible that puer is just against my personal taste. Any suggestions that might change my mind?

Shu puer tends to have a lot less diversity in taste because of the pretty intense breakdown of product over the course of its wet piling. Semi-aged and young raws are often a lot more unique and will have much brighter, clearer flavors.

I don't nor have i heard of others doing that. some would recommend leaving the lid off between steeps if you are really worried though you will loose some aromatics that way (i mostly only do that for delicate green teas)
>Will that help reduce the stewed vegetable green tee type flavors?
while i have never experienced it myself but the flavor people try to avoid by not "steaming the greens" is usually described as being a bit liked cooked spinach. in my limited experience some young Sheng can still have some vegetal notes to them. also I would not describe "stewed vegetable" as a defining taste for a lot of green teas anyways.

North american ginseng is supposed to be cooling while red ginseng is supposed to be warming. I generally run cold. First infusion - slightly smokey, thick tea flavor, dried fruits, bit of a fruity tang on the finish like a tart apple snd then it ends sweet. Okay, first impressions.

As the note says, the tea is pretty broken up from being compressed into the bamboo, so I opted for my zini teapot over the gaiwan, even though the former has muting affects that tend to sometimes mask the full character of a new tea.

I used 6.6g/100ml, which is low for how I usually treat shou, and I think I'll have to up it to 7.5g next time. Did two rinses with boiling water, but I may only do one next time given how long the teapot takes to pour. The first steep didn't leave me with much to analyze, but the second and third are opening up a bit more and reminding me of how the 2018 7572 I have was right after shipping. I'm getting the sense that this is going to need some time to open up. Bamboo flavor is pretty subtle in the background but becomes more pronounced if you slurp the tea and do the thing where you kind of suck it through your front teeth.

I'm going to push it with some long steeps now but, yeah, the first few basically remind me of any other shou right out of the box - not that much going on. I've had several others from W2T that absolutely transformed in the first few weeks so I'm holding out hope.

>> No.15387265

>>15387214

I will say that the texture is extremely nice, though. Not "thick" or "cloudy" like some shou can be, but more like an inkling of how a very well made chicken broth will gelatinize when cooled. Obviously not to that degree, but it feels like it's lubricated going down and really gets in the nooks and crannies of your body if you're into thinking of the cha qi of good teas. I'm still doing some work while steeping this so I'll have to take some free time in a few weeks and really dedicate an hour to focusing in on the brew.

For the Kombucha, half green and half plain black tea,the bulk kind from Amazon. I do continuous brew of two gallons a week. For the Jun, a medium grade green loose leaf with one cup of local honey per gallon. Been brewing for ten years and have been asked to sell it. Don't have the time for that but I certainly have helped others start their brewing.
For flavourings I get stuck with something I like and then overdose on it. Right now, grapefruit and hops flavouring.

So i read up a bit on the phoenix collection. They are mentioned in the teadb vendor guide (https://teadb.org/puerh-vendor-guide/)) which links to a review from one of his teas from Marshaln (http://www.marshaln.com/2012/11/saturday-tastings-with-friends/))
>This tea has very little taste, and what little it does have suggests something no older than 3-4 years. It has a very thin body, no aftertaste, and no real aroma to speak of. Calling this “tea” is a bit charitable. There are two possibilities – either you believe Hoffman’s claims that this tea is from the early 90s, in which case you should never buy aged teas from him because (judging from this and other examples I’ve had) his cave is where puerh goes to die, or you don’t believe his age claims, in which case you shouldn’t be buying this in the first place. Either way, the conclusions are the same.
He links to the tea he thinks he is tasting from another blog (http://chakungfu.blogspot.com/2012/07/early-90s-yiwu-sheng.html))
who says
>Only sold as a full tong with no wrappers or neifei.
>The price of the tong is also extra good at $125 a tong but Hoffman told me that every tong he has opened of this tea has been different so giving a low price. I think I got a good one. A good everyday sheng with age.
So its hard to decide where to go from there. Marshaln says it sucks but he is also tasting tea that was selling for $150 a tong, even back in 2012 i wouldn't expect much for that.
I guess i will make a small order including that 91 kunming tf fancha and maybe one of the looseaf teas he has that are listed as being from the 90s and see if its any good or if it tastes like nothing. wish me luck

I've found it to be a pretty good value so far, and I think I'm about 5 months in now. 29 bucks for an interesting assortment of tea shipped every month isn't bad at all. Some months there is a lot of one thing (last month was 200g of old arbor huangpian and then a 12g square of shou), and others you get a bunch of different little things. It's made me realize I really enjoy some types of tea I might not have explored on my own, which I think is a really nice boon. Part of it is I simply don't have the time anymore to really keep an eye out for new and interesting things or good deals so not having to think about it really eases the tension of feeling like I'm missing out on shit.

Once the spring comes around, though, I'll still probably place my yearly o-cha order and then throw a few hundred bucks at KTM and YS.

I had another session with the 2010 Dayi 7542 from teas we like. It's a really excellent factory tea. I can see why it's considered the benchmark for raw puer. They really nail the balance between smokey big factory flavor and some stonefruit notes, it's not the most plummy tea i have had but it's definitely got hints of that. Good levels of astringency to give it a kind of crisp tartness without being overly drying. Not as bitter as i expected but I'm not super familiar with taiwan storage. It's still a big factory blend tea, it's not super dynamic and it doesn't brew for 20 rounds, but it's pretty good. It still seems absurd to spend more than $60 for a cake of it.
Really interesting to compare to a xiaguqn 8653. The xiaguan is much more smokey and has that strong pine resin flavor, followed by a very sweet finish. I think that the dayi cake wins handily at least against the 09 FTT8653 i have from king tea mall but i really need to try a xiaguan recipe cake from similar storage with an extra 3 or 4 years on it to make up for the super heavy compression.

Anyone have suggestions for good lapsang souchong tea?

I’ve tried Taylor’s and it was good but I’m sure it gets better.

That's westerner meme tea. The chinaman thinks it's for poor people and slobs.
They're right.

I don’t know. I’m incredibly wary of Chinese teas. Don’t listen to all these teafags who tell you they’re perfectly safe. Truth is we have no idea what if any standards or quality controls they have so your lapsong could be made with smoke from tire fires for all we know.

It's kind of hard to find upmarket Lapsang. The higher end versions usually aren't smoked or are very lightly smoked.
You could give this a shot. A few of us have bought from this seller before and he seems good.
This is a light smoke version

This is a heavy smoke version

He also sells this sampler with 15 kinds of lapsang souchong some smoked and some unsmoked.

of course you should get order confirmation, you fucked something up.
if the money went through paypal then you bought it, contact the chink.

yeah I agree check you paypal. if the money was sent double check your email for the receipt then contact fullchea if its not there. if no money was sent something messed and you need to reorder. I have not ordered from fullchea myself (i plan to sometime) but people both here and elsewhere have vouched for them being a legit vendor so i expect things can be made to work out (worst comes to worst you did use paypal and should be able to get a refund).

I hate it when people ask questions and don't say thanks after getting a reply. it seems like the more simple the question the more likely they are not to say thanks. i guess it makes sense that the people who ask the sort of questions that could probably have been answered with a quick bit of research are likely going to be to lazy to reply. I like helping people with questions because I have asked a lot of questions myself but getting some more (you)'s would be nice.

im not expecting anyone here to do anything. of course I've emailed their support, and as i am awaiting reply i thought id ask what others have experienced with fullchea, as i have never placed an order there before

sorry if i was a bit rude i just though it was funny you kept posting replys but did not say whether you knew if the payment went through (which should have been one of your first steps). I hope you get you order without too much hassle. keep us posted as I intend to order from them myself sometime in the future.

Tastes better than if I poured it immediately, but I wonder if I can improve it.

Good point I agree. When put that way it makes things seem better.

to derail this thread further I miss web 1.0 before everything centered around Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube along with Reddit and Discord for hobbies. the internet seemed so much more fun and exiting then before it was gentrified. I have fond memories of accidentally discovering all sorts of weird websites and communities accidentally. the massive influx of normies during the mainstream social media boom really did a number on the signal to noise ratio of the internet as a whole. I even almost miss the terrible 90's website design with all the awful GIF's and odd color schemes. Its still probably better than a lot of websites today. sadly i was not on 4Chan in its heyday.

I got some green tea that says to steep at a temp under boiling. Someone told me it's a bad idea to add milk to lower the temp from boiling and then steep with milk in. Why?

>> No.15400181

>>15400118
Probably because the milk can lower the temp more, i wouldn't worry about it. No health risks from doing so. I'm no sure i would recommend milk in green tea (i don't think it would taste good) but that's another issue entirely.

What is your opinion on these things?

>> No.15400207

>>15400183
They are bad, they keep the water from circulating fully around the leaves and they keep the tea leaves from expanding, better to use the large basket style ones, or brew the leaves loose in your container and then pour through a strainer when done brewing.

>>15400183
I use these ones for work, they're convenient but not ideal. If you put too much tea in it becomes difficult for the water to permeate, so stick to single cup servings with these as you would a tea bag. If you're putting on a whole pot its so much more convenient to just pour the leaves in the boiling water and pour over a mesh strainer.
