I could do vegetarian, but not vegan. And then in that case, it's not like these animals that are kept for milk, wool, and eggs are just let go or cared for for the rest of their lives when they reach the end of their 'production' life, so it feels meaningless to go just vegetarian. A very large percentage of people can't do that. I live just north of Boston, so I have plenty of farms me and plenty of hunting land and plenty of fishing. But there are plenty of places in the country that do not have small local farms and plenty where hunting is not a reasonable option. And even then, it may not be affordable.

Keep in mind that farm subsidies are volume based, which absolutely favors factory farming over small farms before you say "affordability is why factory farming exists!" The economy of scale already makes it cheaper to raise and farm larger qualities on a per acre basis, and subsidies only make that gap even bigger.

I don't know about vegan but I eat plenty of vegetarian meals, without any real intention. Eggs, butter, and other dairy like yogurt and sour cream are good sources of protein, flavor, and are useful ingredients in their own right (binding, leavening, etc).

Problem is that all the screeching in the world isn't going to do shit compared to Monsanto's lobbying. I also think it's reprehensible how Monsanto has modified the major corn crops so that they will not germinate more than once (have to rebuy seeds every season) and that they will not germinate without also using Monsanto's special fertilizer, yet the government subsidies still make this more profitable thanks to the increased yield. Of course, this ignores the fact that it keeps almost all farmers in a never ending debt cycle. The farming industry is a mess from top to bottom.
