The only reason to cool an alcoholic beverage is to hide it's taste. Cocktail became very popular for this reason during Prohibition, because the ice, the added syrups and fruits disguised the shitty flavour of the low quality or adulterated spirits those places sold.

depends what's in it. Glencairn or even a snifter for something reasonably soft. Old Fashioned for peaty scotches, or any first time with an Islay or Highland.

What is it called a "double" old fashioned? Is there a "single" old fashioned? And how are these different than a lowball glass?

>> No.15292195

>>15292154
It fits a double old fashioned with ice nicely. A single or traditional old fashioned glass will hold 6-10oz, a double old fashioned glass will hold 12-16oz usually. These are the same as lowball glasses.

>I am not trying to grade the liquor or dissect its flavours.

I *am* trying to do these things, but for some reason I like DOF better. I like the way it feels in my hand better. And, no need to lie because it's anonymous, I just feel less cool drinking from a glencairn. The irony is that choosing a glass based on that metric makes me less manly and less cool, but that knowledge does not make me feel any less cool.

And to conclude, the amount that I 'cooler' by drinking from a DOF is greater than the amount a glencairn makes the aromas easier to percieve.

>> No.15292206

>>15292199
the lowball/OF is easier to smoke with - you can drink and smoke with the same hand.

this. i can't tell you how many people i "impress" ordering a neat whisky or scotch. insufferable desu. both are entirely valid. some days i want to enjoy a challenging drink, other days i want something to wash the edge off. cunts need to learn that the best way to drink is the way you like it.

>> No.15292239

>>15291468
no it isn't. there are many reasons to cool a drink, hiding its taste is not necessarily one of them.

>> No.15292273

>>15292239
(foreword, because it's 4chan and everything's an argument: I'm agreeing with you) some whiskeys have a completely different set of flavours chilled or with a bit of water - usually when they're spicy or buttery enough to hold their own against it. Some are better (usually Bourbons with a bit too much buttered corn to them), some are worse (Island scotches, possibly without fail), but most are just different.

>not having a wide variety of glasses for every occasion
I have Glencairns, Nick and Noras, coupes, martini glasses, highballs, DOF, some stemmed wine glasses, and some stemmed beer glasses.

The only things I feel might be missing are hurricanes and maybe a nice snifter.

>> No.15294089

>>15293332
Good liquor in a snifter can make you feel better about things... any liquor will do. You have to use good tequila if you're going that route, but it's the only way tequila can fix more problems than it causes.

Stop peating your stagnant pond water, and... well... at least try it if you're going to put that much effort. Chilled whiskey tastes like chilled whiskey, unless you're actually freezing your tongue with it. You might get a touch less "heat" from the alcohol, but that's about it.

I think glencairns look gay, and the science behind them is a little iffy. I've got a little diplomatico glass on a stem that sort of tapers at the top, like a glencairn but not as drastic. I find that if you really want to sniff a fucking drink, a glass like that funnels the alcohol fumes less. More importantly it directs the drink to the tip of my tongue, which is where you pick up sweet flavours

Otherwise I just use a regular glass. Not a lowball necessarily, just a short stubby glass

Nice quads.

They're snifter-esque. It looks like it would do a decent job swirling and aerating the liquor on the tilt up and down, with a fairly open mouth to let things escape rather than just swamping your nose with ethanol and other volatiles... like a jet to the glencairn's piston.

>> No.15295752

Glencairn is the best choice if you like to smell your alcohol, its shape concentrate the aroma.

But it looks super pretentious, so it's ok only for super expensive bottles
