Unless you're buying the right stuff you might be buying scotch that's been imported from scotland and only bottled in Japan anyway. If you're on a budget and need something palatable but cheap, canadian club is like 20 bucks a handle a surprisingly drinkable. The gap between $13 bourbon and $30+ bourbon isn’t that big. Plenty of good bourbon in the 20-30 range. People always recommend Basil Hayden’s but it’s one of my least favorite bourbons.
Bulleit, Makers, or any Jim Beam/Evan Williams select batches for around $25 is gonna be just as good as a lot of meme small batch bourbons for $40. Most of those small batches just buy barrels of Jim Beam and add staves to them for a quick release of some meme product they can slap a $60 label on that hipsters will buy.

moral crisis averted. the great big Nordic man at a local spot had a little special something in for Christmas and it was under $80. at first he thought they only had an open one for tasting and was ready to give me a steep discount(maybe 2 or 3 2oz. pours missing), but cashier told him there was a unopened one and I got it instead. Got a free taste from the open one and it reminded me of Remy Martin XO, but I hadnt had a Campbeltown until then so I was willing to take the chance. Got home and poured some and I now see the "funk". For me its like Ricotta Cheesecake with strawberry topping. Could have sworn the abv was like 59%, 51.5% seems low for "cask strength". This one was bottled in 2018. Having a nice talk about scotch with someone irl and not just on /ck/ was refreshing to say the least and I crossed some things off my list(Campbeltown distilled, cask strength, high quality NAS)

80 fucking bucks for glenmorangie 10? where the fuck do you live and shop? that's horrible. Also glenmorangie 10 is very mild and light tasting, almost watery with some floral and citrus notes.

for some reason my pallet has changed totally in the past year; i used to love bourbon and i had a fucking crazy job where i could try tons of hard-to-find stuff. now, bourbon totally disgusts me. can't even pallet it. a buddy of mine dropped off a blind whisk(e)y tasting for me the other day with a japanese, islay, highland, and bourbon sample and while i got pretty good notes on the first three, all i got on the last was repulsion. literally no tasting notes other than undrinkable.
turns out it was eagle rare, so i didn't feel too bad when i said it was really unpleasant (he knew i had moved away from bourbon but i guess he didn't know i couldn't stomach it anymore.)
long story short being eagle rare is a totally decent mid-low shelf bourbon whose market has inflated its prices or else eliminated its supply. just go get elijah craig 94 and you'll be happy it's cheaper and widely available. plus it's the best fucking mixing bourbon in its price range, but old forrester 100 and evan BiB are good replacements if you're totally strapped for cash

If you can find it, there's this one brand called Wakefield Bros that goes for around $13 a handle. It kind of tastes like Seagrams Whisky mixed with a little bit of maple syrup that makes it smooth, yet a little sweet. It works excellent in mixed drinks, but also drinkable straight.

I pretty much lived off that shit during college.

Well making the distinction pisses off whatever I am

If it meets the specifications for bourbon and is made anywhere in the US, I think it's more than fair to just call it bourbon

In England a good starter scotch is monkey shoulder, it's like £23. It's a blended job but it's incredibly good value. After that you need to be hitting like £30+ for the single malt jobs. My favourite at the moment is Caol Ila. It works like a depth charge. That's closer to £40.
