Most of the time when people talk about anchovies they are referring to these highly salty cured fillets. Sardines aren't cured. If you find un-cured anchovies they actually aren't that different from sardines, they're just another tiny fish.

Yes I found out recently when I bought what I thought were regular cured anchovies. They tasted like sardines.... I put them on my pizza anyway but it was not the same.... Anchovies are useless if not cured.
