Yes it can be. It can also be hell.
>little cousins trapped with their meth head mom on a farm up north
>father beats everyone
>They "hunt" with a rifle out of their basement window, often only to leave the bleeding carcass of the animal on their foyer floor.
>shit aunt finally died after years of hard drug abuse
>the three kids, all developmentally intact (somehow) all really sweet kids.
>After years of the family trying to get custody
>they disappear with the father to another town, it's very hard to track them down and open new cases to try to get custody
>they may be turning rotten as we speak
Every place has its own challenges. I just miss home sometimes.

California is the same way, you've got families who refuse to leave, even due to crushing cost of living, because it would mean that they couldn't get together on days like today. You've got child progidies from wonderful upper middle class families.
Then you've got The city, crime rates higher than ever, Can't even go without your car getting broken into. Drugs and gangs on the streets, corrupt politicians who steal our overtaxed everything to embezzle and wreck the infrastructure.
It's rough out there, but as they say - We must tend our garden.
