15243826 No.15243826 [Reply] [Original]

For context, I'm a bourbon drinker (though not too experienced as a whole) who's used to Wild Turkey, but I wanted to try scotch--however, I didn't want to immediately jump into a single malt that would be either too expensive for my budget or too complex for me to actually appreciate, so I did some research, watched some reviews and picked up a 750ml of Johnnie Walker black label for about $35, hoping it would be a respectable starting point. I would have gotten Glenfiddich 12, but the price at the liquor store I went to (which had a depressingly small scotch selection) was a little steep on it.

To be completely honest, I found the nose to be a bit small compared to bourbon, and the palate was nothing spectacular either by comparison, and the aftertaste reminded me of the way bandaids smell. It made me nauseous for the first few sips, but after that, I found it kind of interesting, if a bit bracing, but it'll definitely take some getting used to.

My hope is that, since I'm used to the bold, ham-fisted flavors of bourbon, it's hard for me to pick apart the flavors of scotch and, as a result, I can't appreciate it properly. This could possibly improve with time and exposure to more of the scotch, and to other scotches, I hope.

Or did I just fuck myself and buy the Jack Daniels of scotch?

Please let me know, and if you have any advice, send it my way, it's always appreciated.

Black label is shit, and scotch is almost always going to be lighter on flavor than bourbon. Find somewhere else to buy booze because $35 for is a rip-off for black label.

Like the poster above said get a copita to smell the scotch better. A glencairn is fine too.

Good starter single malts are glenlivet 12, glenmorangie 10, and glenfiddich 12. Great King Street Artist's Blend and Glasgow Blend are good cheaper blended scotch. Green label is the only good Johnnie Walker.

OP here, crisis averted everyone! I'm just a fucking dumbass and tried it after eating and drinking tea all fucking day, but 30 minutes ago I cleaned my palate by swishing water, then vodka, and had another dram.

This time I tasted a lot of malty sweetness, a campfire type smoke, subtle bourbon-y caramel and the bandaid flavor is actually growing on me, not gonna fucking lie. I'm sure there's still much better out there but at least I know that JW black (if it's at all indicative of scotch) is a decent gateway into scotch for me.

I must apologize to all of you anons for causing such a fuss simply because I tried to taste whisky with a filthy mouth. But to those of you who were actually helpful, thank you very much, and as much as I hate this site some of you are decent human beings.

I think the walker would be a good start. Also try Monkey Shoulder if you can get it, idk what's on the shelves at your stores but i imagine that you'd be able to find that easily.

Since you like bourbon and they tend to be on the sweeter side, not all the time but still. When you're ready to invest in a bottle that's a little more expensive, maybe try looking at a caribbean cask scotch, or a port cask scotch. They'll bring out more sweetness. Obviously there will be other flavors added but it really depends on the product and your palate.

Scotch does vary with the region it's made. You'll have to figure out if you like highland, islay, etc.

Good point you just stated. Everything will be weird the first sip, depending on what you've eaten or drank beforehand, so after the second sip or the second time you try a product, you'll find what you enjoy about it.

Islay is the biggest hitter in terms of flavor. It's not for everyone but lots of people love it. Surprisingly it's one style that I love the most but i rarely drink it, as i rarely drink whiskey these days. As you probably know, it's peaty, smoky, and salty as a general characteristic of the style. One issue is that i have no clue what brands make an entry level islay scotch. Probably a cheaper islay blend i just haven't tried anything but the stuff that's a bit nicer.

That's the point you retard. You bust out the nice whiskey to start off with but through the evening you shouldn't be polishing off a $80+ bottle between your friends. Let them have one nice glass and downgrade from there. Go from high end to mid tier to low. After a while they'll be shipping on it to just sip on it, not evaluating flavors and shit.

Or take the last bit out of your whiskeys and create an infinity bottle and use that as the whiskey that'll keep your friends sipping. There's no need to spend $80+ for you to have two or three glasses tops while your friends drink the rest.
