4-6 bottles is typically the same shipping cost as one bottle: around $15 USD.
So, if you split the shipping cost between four bottles it's like $3-4 per bottle, which is reasonable, instead of like $15 per bottle.
So basically you have to order several bottles at once in order to not get raped by the shipping cost, and it's worth it when you do so. I've enjoyed many whiskies via mail order that I wouldn't have had a chance to purchase locally.

When I was in japan I found the domestic whisky to be of excellent quality for the price. Imported brands which which here are everyday/typical were far inferior and also extremely expensive. Back home I am disappointed. Even tory classic which I drank bottles of over ice with lemon for 950 yen costs about 5,000 yen. For comparison 3,500 yen here would buy you any high end supermarket whisky ... talisker 10 year, chardu 12 year, glenrothes 10 year, jura 10 year, glenlivet 12 year, glenfiddich 12 year, tamavulin 10 year and so on.

In Japan, I think you can buy Scotch and Bourbon at prices close to those in Europe and the United States.
However, Japanese whiskey is also expensive in Japan.
Suntory Hibiki has a manufacturer's retail price of 5,000 JPY. However, the actual selling price is around 10,000 JPY.
I love Nikka's Miyagikyo. This is unpopular in Japan and can be purchased at convenience stores for the manufacturer's suggested retail price of 4,200 JPY + tax. From the Barrel can also be purchased for around JPY 2,400.
Suntory is hopeless. Nikka is the light of hope.
The full bottle of Akkeshi was not available to me. Manufacturer's suggested retail price of 13,500 JPY. You can buy it in the current market for 30,000 JPY. But at that price, I would buy a Scotch of the same price.

Yo I'm thinking of getting a bottle to enjoy over christmas and new years. I want to get into single malt but I fear I might be a tastelet because I am not sure I like it that much? All of the 'proper' whisky I've had I've had to take with at least water though my preference is a couple of very large ice cubes which most people make fun of me for with some getting actually angry, but generally I don't give a shit I'll drink how I want to drink.

My favourite whisky is usually American bourbon to be honest. I like the sweet vanilla/caramel notes and I like the versatility if I've got a bottle in the house because I don't feel bad about drinking it in cocktails or with coke. If I had to choose something safe I'd likely just drink Jim Beam white or supermarket own label bourbon or rye, but then I've usually got that in the house anyway.

Single malt I've got some Nikka from the barrel which I find extremely flavourful, almost confused in what it is trying to be as it has sweet vanilla notes + citrus notes. It is nice, but I find it gives me horrific heart burn, it burns like fuck drank straight.

I've drunk a bottle of Jura and found it to be easy to drink. Again with ice. I think if I went peated again I'd like to try something a bit more special?

Does anybody have any recommendations? I am considering ..

Talisker 10 Year - standard for peated.
Glenlivet 12 Year - standard and I think enjoy speyside more
Aberlour 12 Year - very interested in trying sherry cask aged after the nikka
Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair - again, sherry cask, looks great, supposed to be very harsh though?

Then lower price points
Tamnavulin double cask - again for the sherry
Auchentoshan american oak - for the bourbon notes, supposed to be harsh

It'd be nice to have some opinions or recommendations? I'd like to know if there were some bourbons or rye at these price points which would be worth checking out because I might actually enjoy them more. Part of me is... 3 bottles of white label?
