Wine thread. What are you drinking, what are your favorites, what are you holding on to/cellaring, what do you want to try? Ask questions, post stuff, enjoy wine-related things until the thread gets shut down.

Male wine drinker here. It’s funny buying a good Bordeaux. I usually get asked who I’m buying it for, Wife? Mother? Sister? Surely it can’t be for yourself. Then when I tell it’s for me, I get a shocked look. They recover and decide to ‘play along’ with me. Then they start telling me lots of things I know I about wine.
It’s at this point, if I can be bothered, I go through their shelves and tell them all the ones I’ve tasted and why I like them or not. Which regions I prefer, big up Marlborough, and why I’m not a fan of Californian and 100% prefer Spanish.
Now is when I think they feel bad. Because they always offer me loads of samples. I can usually free taste like 4/5 different ones min on every visit.
Having said that met a really nice man last time through the airport who was giving out Schlumberger samples. We had a great chat. He was awesome.
Now girls at bars when you order a large white find you immediately intriguing. They watch you take a sip. I think they are waiting to see if you make a face. When you look pleased then they have their in to strike up a conversation.
I don’t know a lot of other male wine drinkers but I wish I did. I can only go on so many tasting sessions with girls.

I pound the wine bruh, but I'm a pisshead. Beer is too weak and makes me piss too much. Wine and whiskey for me. Cheap, nasty, smooth expensive, idgaf. Put it inside me.

Drinking a glass of my own xinomavro wine I made a month ago using my own grapes from my yard. Letting it sit for even just a month made it 100 times better than what it was when I just made it.

My wife likes sweet white wines (moscato, riesling, white zinfandel, etc.) and I'd like to get her something interesting. Any suggestions?

I have been on a Nebbiolo kick lately. I really like these wines. Langhe nebbiolo, barbaresco, Barolo, Gattinari. All good in their own ways.

I drank a bottle of Mersault Charmes 2006 Chardonnay for my girlfriend's birthday. It was the best wine I've ever had in my life. It also cost $600.

Unfortunately I don't know enough about wine to actually explain why it was good. I can say that before I even tasted it, just the smell alone told me that it was not an ordinary wine. Really fragrant and complex. If you want to splurge on a white wine, I highly recommend it.

Nebbiolo makes some great wines. Well aged Barolo is seriously world class, and imo Gattinara is criminally underrated.

My recent wine kick has been Austrians. Some really cool wines, obviously the highlights being gruner veltliner and riesling. A decently aged GV smaragd from a good producer (knoll, pichler etc) is up there with some of the absolute top white wines, in my opinion.

As far as white wines go, white burgundy is generally considered some of the absolute best, but it's also pretty much the most expensive (except chablis). The fact that you could get two bottles of white Hermitage, or, say, four bottles of grand cru Alsatian riesling or well-aged white Rioja, for the same price is a bit unfortunate imo.

However, I'd say what you've seen there is what people talk about in the difference between great wine and really top tier wine. A true top wine is more than just delicious, or interesting, or complex even; they can have a real immediate impact of feeling special. Partly it's complexity, partly it's the capacity of really well made wine from great terroir to balance intensity/power with grace... there are a ton of factors.

Maybe try a dry Riesling or a Gewurztraminer. Might be a gateway into drier wines.

Don't forget Valtellina and other wines from alto Piemonte like Colline Novaresi and Coste delle Sesia. Love lighter, twinkier expressions of Nebbiolo!

Really need to explore good Grüner and Blaufränkisch. Really hard to find anything other than entry level wines here.

At least where I am Austrian wines tend to be a bit of a shop specialty; most places have a super limited selection but a few have a good amount. I really suggest trying a smaragd level Gruner Veltliner if you can; the extra ripeness and age, and the tendency to use the best fruit for them, makes them very interesting; they keep all that savoriness and acid but gain some richer spiced/nutty or even smoky character.
