That's because bay leaves are used for their high tanin content which helps preserve many things. I guess it was kept because people eventually forgot its initial function.

They're great if you use fresh dried bay leaf. If you use Mccormick bay leaves from the container that's been in the back of your spice cabinet for 3 years, yeah they're kind of worthless.
