Hardly a unitasker. I don't own one but thought about getting one instead of a true unitasker like a rice cooker.

It's a pressure cooker. You can use it to do anything you use a pressure cooker to do. If you like making curries, stews, soups, etc. it reduces the cooking time and, in my opinion, the pressure really moves the flavor through everything---meat that you cook will be tender and absorb the flavor of whatever you put it in.

They pressure cook beans and rice with less water and shut themselves off when they're done. I own one of these and the more conventional industrial type of pressure cooker (Decor which I believe is just a rebranded Fagor) and so far I'm not disappointed with the Instant Pot. Made a decent cheesecake in it too.

I like that you can saute all of your shit in it before pressure cooking so it's more of a one-pot meal. My only complaint is that recipes for it online are very hit-or-miss. Some burn, some don't fully cook, etc.

Anyone got tips for porting standard pressure cooker recipes to an instant pot? Might be a dumb question but I don't wanna mess up cooking dal or something in it.

I mostly use the slow cooker function which isn't as good as a regular slow cooker. It seems to take much longer than a standard slow cooker. For something that might get 6 hour in a slow cooker, I would give it 8 hours in the instant pot. The standard lid does not let out enough steam so sauce has a tendency to stay watery and not reduce enough. It is improved if you also purchase the glass lid though.

Having a rice cooker and pressure cooker is an added bonus for me. Im willing to put up with the slightly worse slow cooker function to have the added benefits of pressure cooker and rice cooker. I never would have bought those two things if they were stand alone items so all three in one machine is useful.

I make tons of shit in this because I like to cook that way. Biggest time saver for me is for stock. I’ll typically make 4 quarts on a Sunday, use the stock that week for whatever. Super fast, like 2h instead of 8h, and doesn’t make the house smell like boiled carcass, I do chili, beans, stews, etc during winter. I use it to make yogurt a couple time a month (makes 1/3 gallon each time.) I have a rice cooker , which was a gift, so I don’t use the instapot for rice. This fucker gets used all the time and, for real, the time savings is important to me.

It works. I can make rice (with stuff in it, an entire meal). Stews and all that shit, obviously. Pot roast. I can cook a whole chicken, ribs, ect. It's not the best in the world, it's just a way of cooking the food. It's fairly quick and it works.

The saute function is shit so stews come out terrible unless you transfer to a pot on your stove, in which case, why bother.

No reason to use one over a stove top pressure cooker. They're slower, prone to electrical faults and have even less versatility. Inferior in literally every way.

I've been using one for years. It's by far the most convenient method for cooking stew type dishes because you don't need to supervise it. Put the ingredients in, close the lid, press the button, and come back some time later. It doesn't matter exactly when because it holds the food at a safe temperature after it's done cooking. It might not be as delicious as traditional methods done by an expert, but it's near impossible to fuck it up, and it takes about 1/10th the effort, so it's the ideal product for lazy people. I consider it second only in importance to the microwave.

Alton's hate for unitaskers is for shit like an avocado tool that does the job worse than just using a knife and a spoon.

By definition, an electric pressure cooker is less of a unitasker than a rice cooker, but if you're eating rice every day, Alton himself has no complaints about owning such a device.
