I burnt some noodles and had to scrape the fuck outta the pan to get them off. When I rinsed it out, the water would come out grey. My sponge would be cover in black shit after scrubbing too. Now when I wipe the pan down with a paper towel there's way more black/grey smudge left on the towel.

Basically, how do I know when I've fucked my pan and should just reboot it? How would I go about clearing it out and re-seasoning it like it was new? Is that something you ever do, unless there's rust? Help a confused child pls

You can always just throw it in the oven, upside down, with a sheet pan below it lined with foil to catch drips, for maybe an hour at 350F to redo it.

But in general, I would use a copper scrubber, not a sponge, to get off baked stuff. You can use soap and water (and should use soap) all you have to remember is to dry off the pan completely when you are done rinsing it so it doesn't rust.

You can add a coating of oil after it goes in the oven or if it looks dry.

Also kind of new. Does just simply cooking with the pan season it or does a pan truly need to be seasoned with an oven?

It only needs to be put in an oven if you have totally wrecked the surface and there's caked on bits or rust that won't come off. Otherwise scrub out the shit with salt and soap, highly suggest steel or copper coated steel wool, dry it off, oil it, and use it.

heat retention

if you are frying it holds heat very well even when you put cold food into it

Alright but then that is a yes to my question essentially right? That cooking essentially maintains the seasoning

you misunderstood, mang. Why do people who can't read or follow instructions get a cast iron pan

I, too, believe that mistakes cannot be made, and that all mishaps must be due to malice or ignorance. This is why I love 4chan, the only place where I can find people like me *tips fedora to my fellow intellectual

who the FUCK burns noodles in a cast iron? how is that even possible?

the actual noodles didnt really burn, I had already fucked up the portions of my ingredients and basically finished stir frying everything else without adding the noodles, then dumped the noodles in after. then I got distracted by my roommate and left them there for a sec since I didn't really give a fuck about them at that point and it ended up making a layer of noodle stuck to the pan. also they were shit quality noodles
