Start with something light in flavor that won't overwhelm your palate. I would say that you should stick with something in the $25 range but unfortunately prices have been going up so you might want to move up to the $30 range. Get something from either the Highlands or Speyside as they aren't as.......unique as some of the others like Isley. If you want a very basic, yet serviceable single malt then go with Glenn Moray and get something like their Port or Sherry cask. I've been drinking scotch for well over a decade now and I still go back to those every now and then as a table whiskey.

>>15091764
You try it normally in a glass and if the burn is too strong you consider adding an icecube or a cold stone if you're worried about watering down your scotch. There are fancy glasses that fill your nose with the smell before you drink, but that's unimportant. Just pour some in a glass, sip it slowly and try to take in the flavour.

However you like it. Purists will say drink it neat or with a splash of water. I like mine with water.

Get something mid-range mid-shelf, chill it for an hour and then pour some in a glass. Taste it.

Either you hate it or learn to love it. I learned to love it quite quickly.

It could be good to go to a bar or establishment and do a whisky tasting. Of course this is pricier per ounce than buying bottles, but you invest a small amount of money in finding out what you like, and then you can buy bottles for home.

There are a bunch of charts like the one attached that map out the flavors of scotch. Might be useful.

I like a variety of scotches. Four off the top of ny head:
Lagavulin 16
Talisker Skye
Talisker Storm
Laphroaig 15 (12 is also good)
Oban 14

I like smoke. You may not. I had some nice "dessert" scotches once out of curiosity at a pub with a good selecton. I liked them but probably would not buy a bottle.

Best advice I got before I started drinking scotch, and really applies to all whisky, is to start with an inexpensive blend and mix it with something simple (soda, ginger ale, etc.) and with each drink you cut down on the mix.

It's a good way to delve into spirits gently, and acclimate yourself to the taste. Once you get to the point where you are no longer using a mixer, find out what distilleries are used to make the blend, and start buying a bottle of each as single malts. You'll find a region/brand you like, and enjoy from there.

Bartender here.
It's all a matter of preference. Some people like it with mixer (but only have mixer with bottom shelf stuff. Mixer exists to mask the presence of terrible alcohol, but good alcohol exists to be appreciated)

Some people like it on the rocks (ice). Ice both chills whiskey and also enhances or brings out some of its subtler qualities by slowly adding a tiny bit of water to it, which is why some whiskey lovers will only have it with one or two ice cubes, or just a dash of water.

It can also be had straight or "neat". Just the shot and nothing else.

If you're new to spirits then waning yourself onto them by consuming the bottom shelf stuff with less and less mixture to accustom yourself to the taste might help. Once you're able to drink it then it's just a matter of finding what you like. There's a huge variety out there for you to explore.

Remember that it's entirely possible that whiskey might not be to your preference in the end, and that's perfectly fine. We all have our tastes, and it's those differences that make us all unique

Talisker 10yr is a good value for money. I like to have it as an Old Fashioned (A cocktail/enhancement that modifies your choice of bourbon or scotch). Laphroaig does great stuff if you're into smokiness or peatiness (peaty means earthy, sort of). The Japanese stuff can be pretty clean and crisp, but top notch stuff.

There's just one important thing to remember: Southern Comfort is absolute shit and isn't a whiskey. It's a whiskey liqueur, meaning a whole bunch of sugar, flavoring, and preservatives. It's artifical and fake, and horribly sweet. Stay away from it.

They all basically taste the same. I have drunk whisky by the bottle for years. Some are a bit syrupy than the others, some are harsher than others, but the basic flavour is the same. Don't get memed. Just buy whatever is cheap.

My favorite scotch is Ardbeg 10 but I like the Islay style, its not for everyone.
I have a bottle of Glenlivet 12 as well thats decent at best. Its disappointing because it has an incredible smell/aroma but the taste doesnt hold up.
Laphroaig is good too but not for a first timer.

You've got three main types of scotch, more or less, with lots of grey in between. There's your sherry bombs, your peat bombs, and your clean, citrusy, unpeated scotches. Try one of each. See which camp you like most. Then try some of the stuff that's not completely in one camp or the other, such as Bowmore, Clynelish, Springbank, and so on. In no time you'll be an expert, if only in what you enjoy.
