Gyros/Soulvalaki was called döner in Greece untill 1974 when the Turks invaded Cyprus and xenophobia kicked in so they renaimed it to sound local.
Same thing with Shawarma (Lebanese) and Ćevapi (Yugoslav), all are a copy of the original Turkish döner and all have their own unique way of preperations and ingiridents

Thats wrong though. Gyros and souvlaki are two different things. Also depending if you are in Athena or Thessaloniki they mean different things as well. Gyro is the meat that is cut from the layered rotating spit while souvlaki is meat thats cooked on the stick individually. Souvlaki can be enjoyed in a pita like a gyro or by itself. They are not doner its a different thing. Everyone knows this except you Americans
