>the Japanese diet
It varies wildly, what people eat up in Hokkaido isn't the same as what people are eating down in Okinawa.

I'd say also it's not so much the diet as it is the lifestyle. Like how Tokyo and major cities are focused on pedestrians first and not cars, and how train & subways are the norm as well as cycling there's like 100 million places to lock your bike at. In most western countries it's all about driving your car. Major cities ripped out all of their train and trolly tracks in the 1900s after automobile companies bribed them off.

Portion size as well, like how a Large soda or whatever is the equivalent of a small in America.

Statistics on Japanese longevity are improved for the fact that only people who did have good genes lasted through the starvation years during WW2.
It's a population that was already culled to the most hardy individuals.

Their longevity has a bit to do with their diet but also has to do with their portions and cultural views on being overweight. So here are the reasons Japs live so long

1) Their diet incorporates lots of fresh vegetables and fresh fish, and they RARELY have added sugars. Eating sweet food is not common in Japan. As we all know, fructose is terrible for a number of reason. When there is too much fructose, the liver produces uric acid and fat in the form of triglycerides, which increase the risk of fatty liver, heart disease and gout.
So they avoid sugary foods and keep their portions quite small on top of eating fresh raw foods, which is a perfect recipe for a great diet.

2) They have a cultural that strongly denigrates fat people. Japan has a "fat tax" where companies and local governments must now measure the waistlines of Japanese people between the ages of 40 and 74 as part of their annual checkups for workers, and if a certain proportion of their employees are a bit overweight, that company gets fined. So its is normal for Japanese people to minmize their portions and stay active on walks and such to avoid being fat. This also helps the mental health of Japanese people as they stay active in their communities and you see lots of Japs into their deep senior years still staying active, walking around doing things all day.

The diet and lifestyle of Japanese people basically is conducive to people staying active and slim - which is a causal link to higher life expectancy. This happens in Italy and Spain as well (don't fall for the siesta meme, older people in Spain stay very active).

Fat Taxation is a real thing, you can be at risk of losing your job if you are fat as the doctor can report your health status to your employer. In most countries people would cry
Welfare barely pays for anything that isn't the bare essentials for living compared to the US where you can get a huge frozen pizza, soda's, ice cream, and even use EBT/SNAP at fast food places because 'it be 2 expensive to use my dun microwave'
Cars are stupidly expensive to own/operate, your going to be walking most places. When I lived in Asakusa for a while it was a ~1km walk to the train station, then ~1km walk to the place I needed to be.
Wages are lower (average salary in tokyo being that of about 35k before taxes/pension/healthcare), food costs higher that isn't just fish/rice. A large pizza from dominos can easily be ~50 USD in tokyo. People eat less because of it to some extent
Physical education is drilled in fairly early on Tommy can't just sit on the bench and not be failed for not running the 1 mile simply because he feels nervous.
Socially people will point, stare, and make you feel uncomfortable. Try that in North America or Europe and you'll get some lawyer with a support group of liberals going HATE CRIME REEE ABLEIST!

Most of it just comes down to daily exercise in the form of light cardio, owning a car or taking a bus outside select spots in laughable so it's walk or pay for a bike. Simply staying active goes a long way in every respect.

No lol. The pizza thing is literally a cultural difference. In Japan, pizza isn't considered "junk food" but "luxury food" you order for special occasions. It's due to a marketing thing from way back.
As for the food prices, it's also a bit different from the west because their restaurants are often way way way cheaper than cooking your own food for the same amount of calories, and that's not because of sugar either. As for why that is, it's likely because nips just eat less so food markets have to up the prices. Just try not being a fat fuck in Japan and you'll find that high quality and volume restaurant food is really affordable.

I remember this was observed in Scandinavian families where grandparents grew up starving and their grandkids ended up getting nice healthy genes because apparently starving yourself is great for your body and genes.

This article literally explains nothing besides for it mentioning that a lot of Japanese troops died from starvation during WW2 but it doesn't draw any nexus between the mass starvation and the genes of the Japanese. Not only that, the article kind of already takes it for granted that the Japanese diet is inherently healthy and doesn't offer an explanation for that, based on the following quote

>As for the food prices, it's also a bit different from the west because their restaurants are often way way way cheaper than cooking your own food for the same amount of calories,
No just stop, it's generally supply and demand but overall there is far more into it than just that. Not to mention the recent tax hike for eating in that kicked over last year for dine in and not take out
>Just try not being a fat fuck in Japan and you'll find that high quality and volume restaurant food is really affordable.

Sure, there's some green in a lot of things but it's usually a tiny amount, just there to adjust flavour. OP, the famous Okinawan longevity study is pretty outdated, and modern Japanese suffer from a lot of the same poor food choices you see in a ton of modern, industrialized nations. That older diet was heavily plant based, got most of its carbs from one of the healthiest types of yam/sweet potato, was supported with fish and very little meat. The Mediterranean diet comes fairly close in terms of food sources and diet composition, but favors more use of oil and more lax restrictions on meat.

A lot of cultural aspects fed into it as well, a sort of heritage of ingrained frugality and wise use of resources (given that Japan was historically pretty populated given how little of its land could actually be cultivated).

So in essence, eat lots of vegetables, limit meat intake, and consume just what you need to sustain (fasting and bodyweight studies have also shown that being slightly underweight by modern measurement standards actually contributes to a longer lifespan).

It's like how they report the whole country has less than 5k homeless people because they asked a few parts of the country how many homeless people they thought they saw. I'm not joking. People go to alternative medicine shops vs going to a real doctor so it won't show to their Job or raise any issues in health payments. Quack doctors exist all over and real doctors are stupid expensive.

Japan would do 'selective testing' on specific people and groups to make the numbers always go up and be the best of the best rather than report bad news. I don't claim to have expert knowledge of Japanese dietary habits but it's hard to imagine they could maintain a legitimately healthy diet in that sort of food environment. People always say they just eat fish in small portions and drink green tea, but nowhere you go out to eat has moderate portions or particularly healthy meals. You'd have to assume that Japanese people must eat most of their food at home rather than when they're out, but the food industry is on such a massive scale that it seems unlikely. The sheer ubiquity of convenience stores is mind blowing, restaurants are always packed with salary men eating massive bowls of noodles, cute cafes are always filled with girls, there are just so many people eating so much junk in Japan it's hard to imagine they all maintain healthy diets outside of it.

I know that people who dare suggest nips aren't a paragon of health and fitness get shouted down by weeaboos every time but I really think people give Japanese people way too much credit. I don't think they eat like irredeemable fatasses but I also don't think they avoid getting fat by virtue of their healthy lifestyles.

There are loads upon loads of "italian" restaurants here but when you go in it's always some weird fucking japanese ripoff where they fuck up all of the dishes by adding jap shit like raw squid and eel and shit to it and then they try to fucking play it off as "real italian food" It doesn't help that people here don't know what normal bread or cheese is. It's all fucking gross. I have not had any normal-tasting cheese in all the time I've lived here, and good bread is about as rare as a properly paid salaryman. These people are born on this island, they will live their whole lives on this island, and they will die on this island without ever tasting real bread or cheese in their life and that's just sort of sad. The worst part is that because no japanese person actually knows what real italian food is like, nobody can call restaurants out on this bullshit, everyone eats it all up and calls it "honto ni umaiii uwuwuwu" and everyone thinks this is what real italian food is like. It's just sad. "OOOhhh rettsu addu fishu eggu andu seaweedu to pasta carbonara don't u kno this is how rearu itarian peeporu eat!" The worst part for me is that japan doesn't just massacre classic italian food like this, but they also do it with every other country's cuisine imaginable. French, spanish, mexican, turkish, you name it. They botch everything they come across as "wow foreign so cool" but it's never apparently fucking good enough unless they douse it in soy sauce and raw octopus to make it "authentic european" food. Don't get me wrong I love me some japanese food but fuck this country for ruining foreign food culture and fuck the people for being too retarded to not know what real food is like, even though they kind of can't help it, fuck em it's gross

Japs are some of the most close minded people when it comes to foreign cuisine, really. In the chart about several countries stances on foreign cuisines, the "Japan" column shows that very little people would actually be willing to try, let alone enjoy, food that is very different from theirs such as Indian or Turkish. Hell, even a large number of western countries foods were rated lowly by japs, with other far east cuisines being given more favourable scores. Show them asam laksa or falafel, and I doubt that they'll willingly eat it without altering it with mayonnaise, soysauce or corn.
Why the fuck do japs like corn so much?

A. lots of food that is good for digestion, pickles and fermented products
B. a relative lack of high density foods, like sugar, oil, fat etc

A lot comes down to statistical aberrations and their relative wealth.
For instance they do not allow immigrants, who typically die at an age comparable to the country they arrived from.
Their is also I suspect a very low infant mortality, even developed countries may have factors that make this difficult to manage

Japanese eat-out experience is so much more varied that in the West.

Other here you've got the choice between unhealthy fast food or the restaurant experience.

In Japan on top of the fast food and restaurants, there's all these other places that serve affordable, quick, healthy and tasty food.
Eating out is an acceptable thing to do as an alternative to cooking yourself in Japan.
In the West you've either got to cook yourself, eat junk or spend a fortune, there's no in-between.

In Japan you can either get something from a convenience store or from a food bar, curry, ramen, beef don, ect. All for an affordable price.
A Japanese salary man never has to cook for himself

ALL Japanese chefs at any level take pride in what they do. From the cheapest fastest thing, the cooks still gonna put a ton of effort in.

Japs have good genes and lifestyles. Sitting on the floor on it's own increases longevity because you maintain more functional strength as you age which leads to less falls.
The other big factor in aging is simply calories. It's not that any particular food is superior. They dont eat a lot, probably because their food is less flavorful.
In America we have top scientists researching how to make food more addicting and cause you to overeat. We also spend all day sitting, in chairs, at desks, in cars, etc.

First there are the smal portion sizes and a different approach to a meal. In the west you get a slab of meat with a pile of cabs, veggies are an afterthought. In Japan veggies and sides play a more important part in a meal. It's typical to get a smal amount of good quality meat. Less low quality processed food. Its quite cheap to get a healthy and fresh meal on the go. Little restaurants are all over the place and you can get fresh made dishes in 7/11. It's mostly rice/noodles with a bit of meat and veggies. Not much calories.
People walk everywhere and fat people are shamed. It's also normal für older people to either work till old age or take part in the community. It keeps them mentally and physicaly fit. I think that's the most important part. People that live long and healthy lives are activee and have a purpose each day. They don't sit on their ass in front of the TV.

NO. It has NOTHING to do with food. Longevity is an issue of your general lifestyle, not just of 'food'.

It is just based on the fact that they are moral-less people who feed on each other's vital energy in an open and unrestricted way. This allows those who win in that game to reach a very old age, the whole social organization being based on what is usually called 'gerontocracy'. They can literally do what they want and no one controls it in any way.

They learned from the masters at the art of 'nourishing vitality' (from wherever it comes, humans included), the Chinese.

It is nothing asian in itself tho, we are all blood-thirsty monsters inside, and thats what guides all our actions.

High fructose is always an additive not something people manually put in their foods. Thus, your argument stating they rarely have added sugar and avoid sugar is simply wrong since even their bread has high fructose corn syrup. They eat smaller portions as we can see from YOUR graph

>> No.15062325

There may be a genetic predisposition, however diet plays the major role in determining weight and burden of disease. A shift to a westernised diet (dietary convergence) results in more or less the same health outcomes, the same increase in NCD's including ICD. Just look at thailands shift from local markets to centralised super markets. Income inequality and nutritional availability caused by globalisation play the largest sum of it. Other examples: look at how a shift to high processed food diets in Okinawa have changed obesity rates dramatically in such a short time period. Less reliance on the Okinawan sweet potato and consumption of fatty fast foods have lowered their health outcomes.

I believe that the Japanese tend to be healthier than Americans because (a) Japanese have a habit of eating smaller portions for each meal, and (b) Japanese people tend to harass their acquaintances that gain weight.

Although the Japanese claim a greater longevity than most other nations, I strongly suspect this is an illusion caused by a contempt for the elderly that almost all Japanese people would deny. There are countless public cases where solitary old people are thought to have lived to a great age, until someone finally checks in on them and finds that they died decades before. When you get old in Japan, your relatives abandon you.

"It would be a progressive tax: the fatter the taxpayer, the higher the tax. The top of the “normal” range for BMI is 24. A BMI above 25 would pay a small surtax, say 5 percent, BMI 30s would pay 10 percent, etc. The brilliance of Art Laffer’s flat income tax notwithstanding, a flat fat tax simply would not work, since it would not encourage weight-control once the taxpayer’s BMI was well above the taxation threshold.

To deter falsified BMIs, IRS doctors could offer a second opinion. BMI audits might be required at three or six-month intervals to get an accurate reading of each taxpayer’s average BMI during the year, and to prevent unhealthy fasting during the tax season. And given the latest research showing obesity spreads socially, the IRS could even demand friendship data (cross-checked) to ensure individual friendship networks don’t exceed a particular fat-friends quota"

Unfortunately our staple vegetables are pure carbs. Corn and potatoes are stuff best served heavily salted, and we have a huge dairy industry so enjoy your butter and cream.

People still work long hours, but it's not at jobs that kill those calories or sweat out that sodium. The best thing for this nation would to be to create jobs that require physical hardship: manufacturing, forestry, processing, laying roads, welding, mining, etc etc. A wartime economy.
