I guess capers are mostly used in cold foods but I put mine on my lazy rice/veg/protein sloppas drenched in 'Cha and when the capers get hot they shrink and turn into what looks like shiny little plastic balls, it's weird. What did they mean by this.

It's more of an ingredient in recipes, silly. Very distinct and separate uses, I'd say.

>what do they taste like? I saw a jar on clearance I dunno how to cook with them at all

They're good with fish, think of the garnish on a bagel w/lox for instance, or right on top of a grilled fish. They're like olives in this use, and really can be used anywhere you'd put green olives in a recipe.

I use copious amounts of them in Cuban Picadillo with olives at the same time, simmery saucy tomato based, anchovy based or lemon based saucy meat dishes, esp served over couscous, and also Veal (or Chicken) Piccata, which is my favorite use.

Really?

Should I call sushi "Japanese vinegared rice?" Should I call sukemono "vinegar things?" Should I call miso "salt-fermented bean paste?"

Just because you are unfamiliar with Japanese foods, we should edit them to fit your limited knowledge? Are you aware that Google exists?

Japanese plum would also not be the same as umeboshi, it's a less specific term. Umeboshi refers specifically to this particular way of preparing ume. It's a very culturally significant food, and it can definitely be called a staple among the Japanese, whose cuisine heavily incorporates and even revolves around vinegar and pickled/fermented foods.
