Japanese take texture seriously when it comes to their food. Some stuff is real slimy, some shit is extremely crunchy, and soft stuff is usually pillowy soft. Mouthfeel just seems to be very important to them, particularly when it comes to mass produced food products.

In 2004 (yes, I'm old), I spent 6 weeks traveling around Japan by rail and sleeping in the cheapest Internet cafes and hostels I could find. I ate a few meals ate nice restaurants, but day-to-day I mostly ate food from 7-11 and Lawson's. It was cheap and convenient.

I ate SO MANY of those egg salad sandwiches. They look absolutely disgusting, and I would NEVER eat one of them from an American 7-11. But god damn, they were tasty over in Japan.

I also have lifelong bowel issues and IBS. Never once did I get sick. I probably ate about 50+ when I was there from multiple 7-11s.
