Alright anons, it's that time of year again, stock up on turkeys.

I usually buy 6-7 and keep them in a chest freezer and make a turkey roast every month or two.

Pic related is today's haul, a 19lbs bird for around $7.50

they don't usually sell them in stores but they do lay eggs. Most turkeys don't lay eggs as much or as fast as chickens do. About the size of a duck egg but more narrow. They are fine to eat. Why would you have thought they don't lay eggs?

Good for a nice roast, and the leftovers make great sandwiches.

I work at Kroger and I happened across next week's (Nov 11-17) ad and apparently they're doing free turkeys with a $125 same ticket sale (excludes the obvious alcohol, tobacco, gcs) in addition to the usual 37¢/pound with a $25 purchase. I don't know if this is nationwide or just my region.

>> No.15022616

Having said that, 39¢/pound without any additional purchase required is great.

Sadly no kroger in my area anyway, so not something I can take advantage of.

Thankfully my local stores pretty consistently have $0.30-0.40/lbs during this time of year.

>The wholesale price – what grocery stores have to pay for an item – during the first full week of November was about 81 cents per pound for a frozen turkey. The USDA found the national retail price was about 83 cents per pound a week later, which is about the time needed to get the bird from a wholesaler to your store.
How is it so cheap anon

I could walk in and buy 100lbs of turkey for $40 and nothing else.

Why bother waiting if it's a good sale? I know the sale prices in my area for turkey and $0.39/lbs is near as cheap as it'll be. It MIGHT drop another $0.05-0.10 but that would be the absolute lowest.

I bought 1 young turkey breast (bone-in) and 3 boneless turkey breasts (seasoned butterballs) in a my shopping for the apocalyptic pre-election stock up, in case of riots/staying home.

I was thinking the same thing, the weekly roast for sandwiches and recipes (this past week made some open-faced Hot Brown sandwiches). If things go South quickly in the country, I know that I have it onhand, and could use the bone-in breast for actual Thanksgiving. It'll feed maybe 8 with no leftovers.

My freezers are painfully full in my garage fridge and house fridge both. I wish I had a chest freezer. I'd throw in a couple of the sale hams which looked a deal at Aldi for $12 with the glaze, geesh. Right now, I just have some flat ham steaks in the freezers, which is good for recipes, not just roast day.

they go on sale for like $0.43 a lb before christmas. I actually got the free thanksgiving dinner from ibotta this morning. they're all shit products so I don't know what I want to do with it all. I might make a thread about my shitty free thanksgiving dinner why not. if I don't I will probably donate the stuff I don't want and keep the fried onions to munch on

I have a question for you guys. I'm not religious, but my family is Adventist, and they don't eat pork. I saw that lining strips of bacon on top of turkey is supposed to not only increase the overall flavor, but keeps the bird moist, so if I used beef bacon, or if I can find it, mutton bacon, will it do the same thing? I'm discounting turkey bacon because it's definitely going to dry out in an oven.

In the Chicago area, the stores fucked each other so badly one year that they all entered into an agreement not to discount turkeys any more.

I don't know why people care, though, you can buy drumsticks, wings, thighs, and breasts year-round and it is the cheapest meat in the stores. You just have to find the right place to shop. Jewel sucks, they're about twice the price of anywhere else.
