Cheap eggs. I only eat free range organic brown eggs now just due to the fact that you can tell that the chickens are taken much better care of. I know they're still not treated perfectly, but I feel it's better than nothing. I also don't eat chicken meat sold in the stores either; all the meat is massive, has weird textures, and is clearly the result from growth hormones and horrid living conditions.I'd love to buy organic milk too but that shit is too expensive.

Veal is basically a biproduct of farming dairy cows. It's not as though they are tortured. But as someone who rears beef calves, the idea of putting those simple minded little things into the meat works is a bit rough. I just see their potential. It will be the first time they have been on a truck, first time on a steel floor. Then they're just bolted in the head while they sniff around trying to figure out where the fuck they are and what they are standing on. Basically, no one wants them. Saffron apparently has a poor reputation for commercial viability, as does some drupes and nuts, so unless I can figure out if it's fairish trade, I won't buy them; same with dates/figs.

You can see the difference and taste it as well with the eggs. Cheap ones have pale yellow yolks with runny snot for whites. True free range yolks are dark orange due to variety in feed and being allowed to eat bugs. Whites are much firmer and substantial in my experience. Flavor is much better.

I found myself buying locally produced meat much more often. Its more expensive but the standards of animal welfare are high here compared to the other EU countries that sell here.
It genuinly tastes better, and Ive found myself trying harder to honor the animal by making the absolute best of the food I get from it. I even freeze leftover bones from ribs and such to make stock.

Japanese do. It's called 'dancing seafood' and it's horrific, but it's considered a delicacy cause getting it that fresh is expensive. A hotel I stayed at had some lobster come in real fresh. They cracked the things spine and filleted it, still alive, into a bowl it couldn't climb out of. I thought at first 'oh it's like that thing where it's dead but the muscles contract or whatever's until I realized it was literally trying to climb out of the fucking bowl. Turtles are being poached at insane rates to send to China. Sucks. All American native turtles being poached in huge numbers, especially from southern states, shipped to China. Same with certain rare native plants. I once spotted some clearly Chinese people harvesting rare ocean cliff plants, collecting them in milk crates, dozens of crates. I called the local cops and they were there quick. Apparently it's uncommon for them to get tips but they actually give a fuck. That was in northern California, I was on vacation.
