Are you just trying to get drunk? Then with as little food in your stomach as possible, but you'll have a mad terrible headache. Either buy one of those 8-packs of Gatorade or some Pedialyte, slam a bunch before you pass out and then drain the rest when you wake up. Also, make sure to moisturize your skin and use a gentle conditioner the next day; alcohol really dehydrates you.

If you're a casual drinker I'd say eat something greasy and filling beforehand. You'll be able to drink more and the grease will help prevent irritation to your stomach lining.
If you're a hardcore alcoholic like myself I find the most efficient way to get alcohol into your system is a very strong beer (8% - 10%) shotgunned on an empty stomach.
Hard liquor is more efficient technically but its harder to get large amounts of it into you.
