Miss Balvienie, everything they make is underwheling. Port Charlotte is somewhere between ardbeg and lagavulin, moderate peat, but more about fruity, malty notes. It's good but it's also 70 fuckin dollars, which is the same as Uigedail.

Question(s):
Is Ardbeg 10 worth it, considering it basically costs twice as much as Laphroaig 10? Are the Uigeadail or Corryvrecken worth it, considering they're even more expensive?

Since you have to ask, I assume you're somewhat new to whisky. Both Laphroaig and Ardbeg are classic malts and only you can decide which one you like better. I suggest you start with L10 since it's cheaper. Don't worry about different expressions until you've grown out of the standard range since you won't fully appreciate the difference anyway. I don't drink NAS so I don't know about A'bunadh

I turned 21 the other day, and for my first purchase I tried Jim Beam's Kentucky Bourbon. It was alright, with a sting and bitter/sourness that I could go without. What would y'all recommend as a next brown liquor to try out? Is the 'bite' part of the experience?

>> No.15014719

>>15014511
Not necessarily new to whisky, but I haven't tried as many as a lot of anons here and haven't been drinking scotch in a while. I do like Laphroaig 10, so I'll probably pick up a bottle of Ardbeg to see what the fuss is about.

>>15014631
Jim Beam Black was the first whiskey I purchased and what got me into spirits. JB is pretty awful, even for the price, so just about anything will be an upgrade from here. Bourbon is known for having a bite, but Jim Beam just has a bit of shitty flavor profile while at the same time being pretty "thin".

Some of the stuff I keep coming back to because it's great for the price point:
Bourbon - Old Forester 100 proof
Rum - Pussers
Brandy - St Remy VSOP

Aside from the obvious, they taste very different compared to Cognac or Armagnac. The grape varietals used are different, with Cognac using Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche, and Armagnac using those three as well as Baco. Brandy de Jerez is made from the Airén grape.
Another difference is the aging process:

>The Solera, (bottom-most tier), is where the most mature Brandy is kept. It is from the Solera where the Brandy is extracted to be bottled.
>The age of the Brandy decreases as you move from the Solera to the uppermost Criadera (the 8th Criadera with the barrels that sit right at the top of the structure).
>A maximum of only one third of the contents is extracted from each barrel that forms the Solera. This process is known as the “saca.”
>The brandy taken during the saca is replenished with the same quantity of slightly younger brandy from the 1st Criadera, which in turn is replenished with the same quantity of younger brandy from the 2nd Criadera etc.

It has some peat but not near as much as the Laphroaig. Might be a good whisky for a newbie who wants to get into the peated single malts but doesn't feel ready for the very peaty ones.
It's a nice slightly sweet one with the aforementioned peat and a little smoke as well.
I'm sure this won't sit well with the expert who wrote >>15009431 but a little dash of water opens it up nicely and gives you a few more subtle tones. That's true for Laphroaig too, actually, more so than with this one.

No, they should cost the same. I do think Ardbeg is better, but I wouldn't even consider it if it cost double.

A'bunadh is still good, though people do claim it has slipped in quality.
I wouldn't bother tracking quality over time anyway, since quality world wide is trending up so even if a whisky remained exactly the same it wouldn't remain a good choice forever. And some whisky's are far enough ahead, or priced so competitively, that even if they slipped in quality a little they'd still be a decent pick.

Furthermore >>15016637, A'bunahd is not that complex. Just fruit and wood glue with quite the intensity (I really like it).

Around here a 750ml of Maker's is around $23. You won't find many scotch whiskies that are considered "nice" in that price range. If you're a Euro, it might be different.

It has the same reputation as jack daniels and jim beam. It's the type of alcohol what is popular amongst 3 group of people:
1. teenagers, whose parents didn't give them enough money, but they still want their status quo
2. adults who think they are the hottest shit ever. For some reason, they actually brag about drinking this. Add extra obnoxiousness and pretentiousness if they chill the shot glass and pour this into it
3. people with zero or very minimal experience in alcohol. They drink it because they legit don't understand there is better stuff there, or just scared to try.
Clueless normalfag tax comes in too which spikes its price up, creates demand and people larp like it's a really good stuff, and it became a very socially acceptable drink. Its normalfaggotry squeezed into a bottle.

Depends on how expensive and how exotic you want to go.

>good all-around gin
Ford's or Plymouth
>a bit different gin
Nikka Coffey Still Gin or Botanivore
>a bit different gin but not that expensive
Aviation or Hendricks

>good all-around rum
Appleton Estate Signature Rum (more hogo) or Ron Abuelo 7 (less hogo)
>intense banana hogo
Smith & Cross
>I drink sugarcane
Cachaca (basically rum) or rhum barbancourt

Terrible advice. The bottom shelf stuff is intended purely for mixing, and how much better the whisky needs to be for you to enjoy it neat is inversely proportional to you're inherit enjoyment of whisky.
Going into it expecting you're going to be a super lover of whisky who thinks as long as there's malt or oak any off-putting flavours aren't worth mentioning, is stupid. Go into whisky expecting you'll hate it. Try a couple of high quality whiskys of each flavor profile (not region) and then quit if you didn't like any.

I'd recommend something like Ardbeg 10, Dalwhinnie 15, Glenrothes 12, Blantons, and rye or something.

404 whiskey not found

I didn't recommend bottom shelf stuff, if you'll notice. Just drinkable, affordable drams with middle-of-the-road flavor profiles that give you an idea of what to expect from that general style. And then you can decide what elements you like and what elements you didn't and go from there.

And yes, single malt scotches are a terrible place to start for a whiskey beginner because they have no fucking clue what the fuck a "Speyside" or "Highlands" is, I mean isn't all of Scotland highlands??? It's also expensive as fuck compared to other styles of whiskey besides Japanese which is its own brand of shitshow. A beginner will be trying to decide "bourbon vs scotch", not whether they prefer the honeyed sweetness of Dalwhinnie or the dried fruit sweetness of Glenrothes.

3 different prices? not what I expected.
JW black is really pushing the bottom limits of what is safe to put in your mouth. Jameson is a mixing spirit.
Rittenhouse and 4 roses cost about the same as the 3 scotches I recommended.

You actually don't need to know regions, and I specifically said to ignore them and focus on flavor. Regions being complicated is a nonsense reason to avoid scotch.

If we're talking about terrible value, it'd have to be American whisky.

As long as its not jack/jameson/johnny its fine.
For rum, drink captain morgan. You didnt liked it? Good because this is how 98% of rum taste under 40 dollars, its a mixer pit and the reason why rum has a horrible reputation. Don't get memed into diplomatico, its a horrible cough syrup for normalfags, legit worst 30 eur I spent. Go for barbados rums cant go wrong with those. Plantation XO is a good start since its super starter friendly, even if its pricey. If you liked it this go for Doorly 12. Its Plantation XO forma perfecta. If you want it stronger go for mount gay XO. From this you can go anywhere really.

>A beginner isn't looking for a category to explore. He's looking for an answer to the question "do I like whisky?" And your suggestions are pushing him towards a preemptive no.
Pretty presumptive to you to think that those whiskeys lead people to not like whiskey. Case in point: me. I started off with Makers Mark and Jameson and liked them enough to explore more of whiskey once my career got underway. MOST people who like whiskey didn't start off with some expensive bottle; they started off with what was readily available to them at normal stores. Sure, I'm now reaching for the Corryvreckan and Miyagikyo when I pour myself a drink, but expecting a whiskey noob to drop $70 on a bottle when they don't even know if they like the flavor profiles common in whiskey yet is pretty damn ridiculous.

I tend to agree, but I've found some exceptions.
I expect that a blended malt whisky that isn't intentionally using the least intense whiskies possible as a backbone won't taste diluted.
Though my examples are The 6 Isles, which is so peaty that I probably wouldn't notice a decrease in intensity (compared to Ledaig, which I suspect is the backbone), and Compass Box Spice Tree, which is all cask influence from the European Oak.

They're actually diluting it with flavorless column distilled grain whisky in most cases.
And in most of the rest you get some pretty flavorless shit like Linkwood in Johnny Green or any of Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie in Monkey Shoulder.
Whereas with The 6 Isles you have Talisker, Ledaig, Highland Park, Jura and Arran, none of which are subtle.

Does Green taste like diluted Linkwood? I could believe it. Does Monkey Shoulder taste like diluted Glenfiddich? Yes. Does The 6 Isles taste like diluted Ledaig? No, not at all.

It's not just a matter the blend being worse than the sum of its parts, they're putting in inferior parts. And water.

Try a home blend. Mix Ardbeg with Laphroaig and tell me it's less intense than Ardbeg or Laphroaig.

tl;dr it was a wrong opinion
