Why do people shit on this grape?
>Doesn't need 10 years of aging like cabs
>Complex flavor with lighter body
>10 to 20 buck zins murder cabs in the same price range
>Is the cousin of a grape the italians drink daily.

If I'm spending 50 bucks on a bottle I'd go for a older cab, but for a weekend bbq or some pizza or anything else I'm going old vine zin every day.

Why is it not popular outside of italy and western usa?

I like red zin, the supermarket here has a bottle that is made with Italian grapes and aged in American oak. Very lively wine.

zinfandel ripens unevenly and california has a nasty habit of leaving clusters on the vine until every singe grape has ripened, which means the grapes that ripened first are now extremely overripe
this means high alcohol, high sugar, low acid wines that are typically shat out at maximum production. The best zinfandels on the market from a flavor and depth standpoint are all sub-15% alcohol, probably Ridge if I were to give it to one producer, but everything else is jammy, boozy, and simple

i think people shit on it because its often sweet. i fucking hate sweet wine. and in the US most zinfandel i see is borderline desert wine with how sweet it is. that being said, the zins in northern italy are usually much more dry. so i think outside of germany and italy most zinfandels you find are sweet and that can be a big turnoff to frequent drinkers and typically sweet wines are pretty limited in their pairing options.

lmao you're the mouth breather I was talking about, "old vine zinfandel" is one of those terms like "real cheese", it might sound like a good thing if you're a mouth breather but it just says more about what you take for granted than anything else
it's better to cheap out on a bordeaux blend than a zin you rube
