Hey /ck/, what non-western meals you hear about that make you go "WTF?" but are actually delicious?

For me, it's Tamago Kake Gohan (rice mixed with a raw egg).
I use my rice cooker to make some white or brown rice. Sometimes I replace the water with chicken, beef, or turkey broth.
Once the rice is cooked I add some soy sauce and crack a raw egg over it. Mixing it thoroughly with a spoon.

I'm the OP and yes, the rice won't cook the egg. I've heard that the bacteria is killed due to the heat but that is from Japanese people I've known over the years who introduced me to the snack/meal.

Yeah, that's a lie, too. That's like saying you can kill bacteria by sticking it under a heat lamp. That said, only something like 1 in 20 000 eggs in the US are infected with salmonella (compared to around 1 in 30 000 in Germany). You odds of getting sick eating runny or raw eggs is pretty low, especially if they've been kept refrigerated.

this
there was a single salmonella scare a few decades ago in the american egg industry due to poor husbandry and "raw eggs contain salmonella" became as common a belief as "your blood is blue until it touches oxygen"

Why would you eat shitty rice just for the taste for delicious raw egg yolk? I regulalry fry some minced meat with spices, garlic and add 1-2 eggyolks as the sauce on top. Add some mashed tatoes and you will actually have a real nutricious and delicious meal.

raw eggs in the USA should be pasteurized (buy them that way or do it yourself) and as fresh as you can get.

It isn't an issue in Japan because they are autistic about food safety (especially eggs, because they eat a lot of raw eggs) and have extremely short use by dates on eggs. Nothing magical just altered priorities.

The fact the is no second component to the meal bothers me, a bowl of rice egg and soy sauce seems like a poverty meal whereas carbonara uses pretty indulgent meats and cheeses

You could just as easily crack an egg into rice as it simmers on the stove top/in the rice cooker. This will actually cook the egg. I do this a lot for my oats/wheat porridge/grits. I think it happens a lot in congee recipes too. It'll produce a different texture to gohan rice but it will negate any health concerns you might have.

Egg shells are porous. The awful flavor of rubbing alcohol will permeate the egg.

Besides, if your eggs come to you refrigerated, they've already been washed and sanitized.

Salmonella is only ever on the shell, anyways. You can blanch your eggs in boiling water for 5 seconds if you want to kill anything on the shell. Shouldn't really cook anything on the inside.

>> No.14990139

I have tried making this over and over and over and it always comes out as some disgusting shit. It's like when you crack an egg into ramen and stir it around and the noodles just get caked in gross semi-cooked egg goo.
