Tomatoes are the key. You should always use the best quality available, fresh ones only during summer. Everything else is secondary

this but consider to use the right cultivar, not all tomatoes have the same purpose
i absolutely love cuore di bue tomatoes for salads but i strongly prefer san marzano for sauces, berry tomatoes are good in pasta (in my opinion) only if they stirfried or even fresh in cold pasta dishes

If making sauce from scratch isn't an option because you're lazy or in a pinch, you can mix two different kinds of sauces that you can get from your local supermarket. Last time we did it we mixed a tomato and basil and a spicy arrabiata and got an excellent sauce.

“In prison, dinner was always a big thing. We had a pasta course and then we had a meat or fish. Paulie did the prep work. He was doing a year for contempt, and he had this wonderful system for doing the garlic. He used a razor, and he used to slice it so thin that he used to liquefy in the pan with just a little oil. It was a very good system.”

Tomatoes.

Fresh off the vine are best, make sure they are paste tomatoes. Most store bought tomatoes are complete garbage, but you can make an 8/10 sauce if you do this:

Buy some cherry tomatoes or roma tomatoes or a combo of both. Dice them up. Put some good olive oil in a pan with chopped garlic, chopped fresh basil. Toast the chopped garlic and chopped basil. Add in the diced fresh tomatoes, cook everything together for 5-10 minutes. Usually you'll need a little extra sugar to make up for the store tomatoes, so add in 1 tsp of white sugar until the correct acid to sugar balance is achieved. During the last minute of cooking add in some fresh chopped basil and take the sauce off the heat.

Everything should be nicely broken down. You can eat as is OR you can strain through a mesh strainer for a smoother texture.

Cook diced sweet onions in olive oil until they are translucent.
Put garlic in and cook it until it turns golden.
Put the tomatoes in.
Put in oregano and salt.

This makes a good sauce. Tons of stuff you can do from this point, but this will get you a good base sauce to play with
