14887098 No.14887098 [Reply] [Original]

Are you getting ready for this Christmas vacations?

Don’t forget to stock on yours panettone and pandoro in advance should a new lockdown happen.

As always my top suggestion is pic related (Panettone Baladin) which is also available in the USA and other countries, but as we’ve seen last year there are other premium brands available on Italian food specialised shops abroad.

Post your panettone / pandoro of choice and discuss your experiences with them.

You can preorder them, some stores already have Albertengo panettone in stock (the first batches they are fresh and last minimum 3-4 months so they’re fine for Christmas).
Baladin will ship in 14 days, so in November.

The "Holiday Season" grows to encompass more and more of the calendar every year. Before you know it they'll be having "EARLY BLACK FRIDAY BLOWOUT SALES" in the middle of August. Thanksgiving turkeys will be available by the second week of April. Christmas music will be playing in every grocery store at every hour, forever. Friendly reminder: 20€ is the medium price for a good one, above that amount of money you’re getting something more luxurious (Italian prices ofc).

The general good rules are:

>buy a couple good ones that can include a “luxury” one (1 or more for Christmas depending on how much people there will be and 1 for the rest of the season)
>buy 1 pandoro for the New Year’s Eve
>NEVER buy store branded ones because they’re trash with some rare exceptions

Just avoid fake Italian products (check on google.it or amazon.it before to see if it exists there) and avoid Bauli or Motta because while they’re legit famous Italian brands the quality is low, they’re ultra cheap here in Italy. They’re not bad or rubbish but the point is: you want a good panettone because if you have a big cheap panettone consider that you have to eat it before it goes bad so if it’s cheap you won’t enjoy it.

Better buying less panettone buy keep the quality high.

Apart from some small ingredients, panettone has a lot more eggs and it’s made from sourdough that has to rest and grow 2-3 days while Pandoro can also be made with beer yeast and has to rest less time, up to 36 hours.

The other differences are that panettone has an exterior crust which can have an amaretto glaze with whole almonds or hazelnuts, it also has candied fruit inside and raisins while Pandoro is plain, is softer and doesn’t have a crust while being also sweeter and tastes like brioche.

They’re different sweets and you should try both.

It depends from the store, for example on Amazon you place the preorder and pay once they deliver. The same goes for my store, however if they don’t deliver they simply cancel the transaction.
We’re not talking of spending $300 3 months before the delivery estimate, we’re talking of 7-14 days.

It’s technically a pre authorisation of payment on your credit card, kind of like when you go to the petrol station at the self service and you put the card in the machine, you’re pre authorising a movement of money of maximum 110€ and when you put the gas pistol back in its place after refilling the machine bills the amount of fuel you pumped in your car without you having to input the pin again. If you don’t pump gasoline the transaction gets aborted.

Question to italians: which are good supermarket pannetone and pandoro? I work currently in switzerland and can easily shop in italian supermarkets by travelling for an hour by train (ideally in coop).

That’s not always the case. My choice for a commercial panettone is “tre Marie”. Overpriced but probably the best you can get at a supermarket. Bauli’s pandoro is really good for its price

>> No.14894282

>>14894048
Le tre Marie can be fairly good, however yes usually the pricier the better but please stay away from the ones filled with chocolate etc.. because they’re cheap garbage (I mean they can be ok for breakfast indeed but if you want a good panettone look elsewhere).

I don’t know t b h, the fact is that here in Italy many people don’t feel the need to buy these stellar chefs made panettoni and so on because basically every bakery at least here in north Italy makes its own panettone and pandoro, at that point you’d just have to know the right baker that makes the best panettone.

There are also bakeries from famous chefs that sell you expensive panettone but not as expensive as you would think.

Here’s a chart of the best bakeries and their panettone according to this famous Italian gastronomic guide

You need to check import websites in your country, the ones that sell Italian deli but I think it’s unlikely that you’d find the top ones.

You can’t order from Italian websites because the product is too fragile so you need to check websites like eataly.com

As the other guy said it’s very unlikely since they’re made in small numbers and super fresh, they only ship to Europe (and not everyone).

I’d suggest you to look for these brands rated from the best: Baladin (on eataly.com when they start selling them), Albertengo (one shop has been posted here and the other one is igourmet.com) and Le Tre Marie especially for the Pandoro.

Galup panettone seems to pop out in the US so you can try it, there are also other Italian brands but AVOID Bauli and the super cheap ones sold for $12 per 1 kg because while they’re not bad they’re however industrial products, maybe buy one to share but don’t expect to be as good as the other ones that costs 4 times more.

Pic related is the one anon, especially if it’s on offer like this one (it was past Christmas though) be sure to buy more than one trust me.
