Traditionally, pizza was meant to be eaten more like a family of bread sticks accompanied by toppings a la mode. The central lane of the old world pie thus was designated the demarcation point at which toppings would be placed, thus encouraging the knowledgeable and cultured to tear strips/chunks of extending dough to load as they see fit. The Italia are a naturally filthy race, and hand hygiene in traditional times was nonexistent at best (Note: this is anything pre-2019). It wasn't considered a faux pas to slather the communal pie in the search for the perfect topping- in a sense becoming what one might call a "nacho".

Irregardless, Papa John's is as intended for pizza to be.
