It's overplayed here but WT 101 is pretty good value. It's mediocre as far as bourbons go from a flavor stand point, but it also tends to be fucking cheap, ~$38 for a handle near me at least.

For that price, it's probably best value for mixed drinks, but you're better off shelling out more if you drink your whiskey neat.

Liquor store employee here, asking for help. I'm not really a big whiskey drinker, but whiskey is what customers always want recommendations on. What's a safe rec that will pretty much be guaranteed to satisfy someone that wants a step up from your basic bitch bourbons? I tend to recommend Basil Hayden, Knob Creek and Old Forester, but honestly my go-to whiskey is Larceny. If you drink one dram a day you'd drink a little more than a bottle a month.
12 bottles a year for a few years and you'll have an idea of what's what.

That's supplemented with trying whatever your friends are buying, whatever your bottle shop will let you taste, and bars.

If you're so inclined grab a friend and go to a whisky bar. Go down the menu ordering half pours and split them; you'll try 40 in an evening.

Also the people here aren't nearly as knowledgeable as they seem. You'll get responses to questions like "Help me choose between X, Y, Z" being "Z is good" (haven't tried the rest). Or people telling you that your list of really out there / hard to get and region limited whiskies are all shit when there's zero chance that someone has tried them all.

Buying a Yamazaki bottle is very difficult even in Japan.
However, Suntory-affiliated bars in Japan offer shots of Yamazaki.
12 years. 18 years. Fragrant and calm. I respect Yamazaki. Suntory aims for harmony.
Suntory excels in blending technology. But now, due to lack of malt, the technology is not fully utilized.
Nikka is not afraid of individuality. Yoichi, a sweetheart, is dear. Keep an eye on the rampage Miyagikyo.
However, like Suntory, there is a shortage of malt. We ship without sufficient maturity.
It's great to buy From the barrel for $ 20. Half price of Yoichi and Miyagikyo. I think that imported barrels are also used, but this is also Nikka's seriousness.

The price of From the Barrel in Japan is around 2400JPY-4000JPY.
Yamazaki is 4200 JPY. However, the actual selling price is 8000JPY-10000JPY.
Yoichi and Miyagikyo are also 4200 JPY. You can buy this at that price.
Cheap Japanese brand whiskey starts at around 800 JPY.
Cheap scotch costs around 900-1300 JPY.
Johnnie Walker black label is 2100-3000 JPY.
Macallan 12 costs 7,000 JPY to 10,000 JPY.
Wild Turkey 101 costs around 2200 to 2500 JPY.
+ 10% consumption tax.
The photo shows From the Barrel with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of 2400 JPY. It was sold at a supermarket for 2250 yen + 10% consumption tax, and I bought it.

I'm sorry. I searched for the percentage of alcohol consumption in Japan, but couldn't find it.
Few Japanese people drink whiskey straight.
But that few enthusiasts have supported Japanese bars.
In Japan, a small number of bars stocking cocktails and a large number of whiskeys are traditionally maintained.
In recent years, some stores also sell Scotch's original otaku labels.
The original label whiskey is carefully selected and has no loss.
Otaku label alcohol is becoming a genre in Japan.

They don't sell "toki" in Japan but I had a couple of other Suntory blended whiskys while I was living there and it tastes very similar. The Japanese love their highballs. You can even get premade highballs in a can at every convenience store, and every bar sells them cheap too. maybe I am biased because of nostalgia but Toki makes perfect highballs and I definitely recommend it for that purpose.

As far as actually sweet whisky, try edradour SFTC series, go for the ones matured in madeira, sauternes, sherry ones are hit or miss in terms of sweetness but the IBISCO bottlings are usually sweet. i aint quite past the neck on the Glenfarclas yet, its just a few hours old to me. Balvenie is pretty nice. So far the two pours of the Glenfarclas are sort of odd. I think the bottle may have been sitting where the cork was getting wet because its soaked and seems to have tainted the liquor. the actual flavors I've gotten are sort of briney/savoury.

Should I generally be cleaning my Glencairn between each glass? I enjoy sniffing it more after the whiskys gone and will continue the next morning. It almost like a vanilla candle after its been blown out.

As far as mixing goes, i just go for it in the glass. I did a few drops into the Evan Williams. under 10 mins and it sort of had a peppered beef jerky spice on the nose and grilled corn on the cobb on the palate. Although the BiB is 50 ABV it doesnt seem to take any water at all.
